1.
Good idea Matt but I didn't bring an adapter to go from camera to cumputer-wish I did-actually wish I didn't forget the card reader. I have done this tens of times but it is sitting on my desk at home-including the canon usb too. I just need to find a store in florence so I don't spend my day looking.

  2.
I am on vacation in beautiful Italy and first my lens breaks-I have back ups but not happy since this was my walk arounfd zoom but now I forgot to bring my card reader. So I have my computer and external harddrive to back up my photos on 7D and G12 but forgot my CARD READER. I am leaving Venice to Florence-any shops in Florence †hat someone knows to but a card reader. I assume must be a lot of shops but thought soemone can guide me so I can get one fast. Thanks

  3.
I use a macbook and a sandisc imagemate to transfer the file. I just drag into an external drive (WD passport). Maybe I need to see if the WD external drive has a preference. When I do this on my IMac (same way except I drag into Bridge CS5 and later copy to another external harddrive ) I have no problems with my flash card keeping the photos in place.

  4.
Hi Matt.
No I ejected the card reader in a proper manner. I can also go back to the computer and my photos are still the the folder. So I haven't lost them and have them all backed up-a very good thing! But why doesn't my canon read those photos since they are still"in" the card? I know I can just format my card and go on snapping photos since all is backed up but for now I want to keep the photos on the card while I continue to fill up the card with more photos. I have checked the canon menu to see if I missed something but no luck. I am going on vacation next week and I am just experimenting on saving my photos on a lap top, external hard drive and still keep on the flash card.

  5.
Transfered photos to my computer from 7D canon. No problems. Placed compact flash back into camera and my camera says I have NO photos despite seeing a lower number in the view box indicating the photos are still on my flash card. I know when I format card all will be erased but I want to keep photos on card for now-so how can I see them in my camera?

  6.
As I'm getting older lightening my load makes sense so I feel your pain. First I would settle on 1 new camera system or pick 1 from your 2 and leave the other in the hotel in case 1 breaks but don't carry both. I have let go of my trusted, old and too heavy manfrotto 3021pro. I got a feisol CT 3342 (- http://www.feisol.net/tripods-tournament-class-c-1_14.html). It is 2.4 lbs w/o my ball head. Best move I made, you just smile when you lift it up. So I would find a sturdy but lighter tripod. Depending on the hike I try to just take my belt system ( think tank - http://www.thinktankphoto.com/categories/skin-component-systems.aspx), 1 body, 2 lenses, batteries, filter ect, and tripod case that came with feisol that I sling over my back. Or I take a backpack and hook my tripod on. Either way I have my hands free. I decide before I hike what lenses I think I will need and live with my compromise and don't beat myself up when I wish I had another lens. By the way I have no connection with feisol or thinktank just like the products.
good luck Paul

  7. OK I am ready to buy another tripod. I have a bogen 3021pro with a Arca-Swiss Z1 head -still going strong but just

too heavy for my longer hikes. I like the Feisol Tournament ct-3342. Has all that I need. Light weight, 3 legs seems

supportive enough for my style, great price and even comes with a travel bag.I just couln't see why I would pay

almost double for my other choice the Gitzo gt 1531. But here is what I am concerned about - Preset leg angles at

    25, 50, and 75 degrees-

Is this going to restrict what I can do? I am used to the 3021 where I can place in any direction or angle. Has anyone

had a problem with preset for your legs??

    Thanks Paul

Thanks for your comment on my question. I checked out your web site-very nice . I really love your black and white photos. As far as the blog I agree with Bill. You need to add to it at least weekly. I have seen some of my favorite photographers who will blog so haphazardly that it doesn't look good and you just stop checking back to their website. If you can and like to keep up a blog that would keep a dedicated bunch of people coming back to see what you have done.
By the way who did you use to set up your site? This is what I want to do. Use a nice site like yours so when friends of mine asked to see my photos I can just say go to my website. I don't have the desire or ability to blog so I think I would just be content to have my photos to show. If you don't mind can you tell me how you designed your site, general cost and how much do you have to pay per year to keep it up.
Good luck. Paul

  10.
I have been thinking of a web site to both show my photos and to sell them. I realize that I will probably sell very few photos and this isn't going to keep me from my non photography day job. With that in mind has anyone used betterphotos website? They have a sell going on on their sites ranging from $199 to 349 for 2 years.

  11.
Thanks for your responses. I will be sending it back to AS to evaluate. Since I just bought it I am not yet ready to swap out the clamp. For all the praise heaped on them over the years I am sure they will have some answers. I am surprised they don't have a web site or better instruction on their products. A few video tutorials would have been very helpfull

  12.
OK after reading a lot of reviews and comments I decided to buy a arca swiss z1. Just got back from first outing and I am concerned about the quick-release system( I got the flip lock lever ). Yes the flip lock can be a little tricky when it is a little cold and you are trying to push that little button to start moving the lever. But my problem was with the tension lever ( those little nut/washers located in the middle of the plate). As you switch from verticle to horizontal with an L plate or just removing camera and placing it back during a day of usage I found the tension loosening. At first it is tight then as time goes by it loosens. At 1 point while carring camera, tripod and head over my shoulder I was moving from right to left shoulder and noticed my plate was moving out of the head. Also when you go tighting this tension and are not careful the whole nut an washer can go flying out. Granted the elipitcal ball is wonderful but this tension device looks like a troubling problem. Has anyone any suggestions to correct this. I am thinking of sending it back to arca to check out but I am afraid this is design flaw. I don't want to be always playing with this and worring about camera body slipping out. Long term reliability of this lever system is a major concern.

I left for the Canadian Rockies on July 2 so I missed some of your help. The reason for the original question was to get ready for this trip. I knew the type of photos I wanted but also knew my knowledge on this subject was weak. I have uploaded a few photos( more on my site) so you can judge my results.. I used a tripod , remote and sometimes a timer. Most photos were bracketed and merged in photomatix. I tried using my grad filters but I got better results do to the extreme contrast I encountered in the field.. I tried different apertures but seemed to get the best results with f/22. I am going to read the recommended articles because I spent too much time sometimes focusing 5 feet then 10 feet then in the middle of the lake and never feeling in control . I was hoping to use a full frame camera but that didn’t work out so I primarily used my 20D with a 10-22mm lens with polarizer. I wished a few of my foreground subjects were a little sharper but all in all for a rank amateur I think I did well. Again thanks for your suggestion.

  14.
Thanks guys. I will try this out. As I said before all the books on landscape( like Shaw and Adams) seem to routinly stop down to f/22 or even more if you can. But since I am not happy with my results I will try to open up more and get a little faster shutter speed to.

  15.
It is a canon 10- 22mm lens, Most of the landscape books I have read seem to use small aperture like f/22 so there is a greater DOF. This was just a test photo so I wasn't concerned about the the wind blowing thru the trees.I didn't use a remote so there may be some camera shake despite the tripod. Since I set this on aperture priority that is why 1/13 but if I step down to f/22 I would assume a slow shutter speed especially with low iso. But isn't this what is recommended for a sharp dof?

  16.
OK I have read and reread about hyperfocus but I still haven't mastered it. Here are 2 examples one regular and the other hdr. The non hdr were done with a 20d canon, tripod and set at f/22 at 1/13 with iso 100. I was a 14mm ( which would be about 22 feet) so I focused at about 3 feet. The hdr was bracketed at -2,0,+2. I tried multilple times but can't seem to get sharp focus thought my photo.
