1.
I received my 1D MIII back from repair and they switched out the shutter. The camera now fires consistently. However, when I shoot a few pics I can only review the most recent ones the rest appear with a "?" and the message cannot read image. As soon as I shoot more, the ones that were previously readable become unreadable. When I downloaded the images from my card to my PC, many of them show with 0 KB, though on the card they have the full size. When I try to open them from the card I get a wrong format error.
I always format my card before use, so I doubt the card is to blame. I am pissed that the people who switched out the shutter did not test the camera afterwards to see that everything works fine. Now I don't know how to recover some of my pictures. I am seriously thinking of selling the 1D...

  2.
I really think there is a problem with the 1D M III. I bought another one since my previous one got stolen and I upgradede to the latest firmware 1.2.3. I have shot less than 1000 pictures and last weekend I got the Error 99 and could not get the camera to take pictures anymore.. very disappointed in Canon. None of my 10D, 20D, 40D, 50D and 5D I've had ever had any problems.. then you buy a "professional" model camera and it is not reliable at all... I could believe its an exception if it happens once in a while - but 2 brand new cameras that were bought well after the model just came out showed this behavior - so IMHo there is an intrinsic issue with the 1D MIII - I would not recommend it.

  3.
I am on my 2nd 1D Mark III. The first one got stolen, but it also had this error appear when shooting high bursts. I was going to send it in to Canon, but then it was stolen. I bought the camera again 2 months ago. I didn't take it to Madagascar so it was not being used for the month I was gone. today I went to shoot at the local Zoo and it gave me the Error 99 - this time I couldn't get it to go away and the camera is totally useless now. I do have the latest Firmware 1.2.3 installed. Even if Canon fixes it, I won't be able to trust it. I have had the 10D, 20D, 40D, 50D, and 5D and never EVER had an issue with any of them, then I buy myself a "professional" level camera which apparently never went through any testing at Canon... too many companies rely on their customers to test their crap these days...
I am thinking of selling it once fixed and trying out the 5D Mark II. The 50D with 6.5 fps is not quite as fast, but at least its reliable....

  4. Thanks Mark.

I just purchased a 1D Mark III a month ago and took it to Namibia for three weeks. In Namibia there is a lot of dust and for that reason I only changed lenses very rarely and just kept shooting with different bodies. I was doing some action shots of a dancer jumping off a dune and really used the 10 fps capability of the camera. After quite a few of these sequences without any problem, the camrea locked up and gave me the Error 99 message. I turned it off took out the battery and reinstalle dit but it still kept doing it. I switched to another lens and turned IS off to see if it was due to the lens. I also tried a different CF. Some sequences worked fine after that, but then again it would lock up consistently.

I have not used it this extensively since that shoot, and I will definitely clean the contacts (due to the dust), but its a brand new camera and should not be giving me this error.

You mentioned: "1-Bad Shutter, 2-Bad Aperture control assembly in the camera, 3-Bad aperture assembly in the lens, 4-Bent pins in CF card slot, 5-Bad Battery (third party usually), 6-Corrosion 7-Lens Contacts."

I doubt its corrosion or battery, so I am wondering if there is anything else I should check or just send it in to Canon? I also noticed that I do now have some dust specks on my sensor. I have found that brand new Canon bodies even deliver with some dust on them, but this dust is new and must have entered in Namibia. Is it safe to have Canon do a sensor cleaning?

  5. I haven't read all the posts so if this has been said I am sorry. I love the 5D. That said, I really wish it had a larger LCD screen like the 40D and it would have a little higher fps and maybe a self-cleaning sensor. Other than that the camera is awesome. I am sure that all of those features will be found on the MII with maybe a few more pixels. So I would wait. Especially, since I have the gut feeling that the MII is just around the corner. I am hoping for an announcement end of this month and availability in September - but maybe I am dreaming ;)

Unfortunately, this will come too late for my trip to Namibia, so I will take my IR converted 20D, 40D, 5D and 1D MIII (otherwise I would have bought the 5D MII). So if money is not an issue and you can wait another month or so, I'd get the 5D MII....

Geez what's with the Nikon vs. Canon crap again? I mean if you love Nikon stay with it - I for one know why I am with Canon and I do not regret it.

  6. I rented both and chose the 300 2.8. For me this is the non plus ultra when it comes to lenses. The 500 is probably better for birds though as you need the extra reach. I found the IQ on the 300 to be better and loved the bokeh you get at 2.8. Main pro for me is that I can actually handhold the 300 without any issues whereas the 500 required at least a monopod or something to lean against.

I suggest renting them and finding out for yourself. I paid little to rent the 300 and the 500 was even free to try out. I also suggest buying it in the US, it is much cheaper there and even with the import tax etc. worthwile....

  7. "I guess I'll get the 85mm because, like many of you said, it's a special lens that can make picture look different from every other lens, while the 70-200 is just a beautiful, but still normal, zoom. "

I would not call it a "normal" zoom. As far as zooms go, this is Canon's finest lens.

I own the 70-200 IS 2.8L and it is fantastic. Only lens I own that has better IQ and bokeh is the 300 IS 2.8 L. If you look at the thread about favorite lenses, it is the most commonly mentioned lens. The 85 1.2 is a "special application" lens - the DOF at 1.2 is almost too thin for most portraits IMHO.

I would definitely get the 70-200. I also own the 100-400, which I like, but its nowhere near as good as the 70-200. At 100mm and 2.8, for instance, you can take some amazing portraits.

  8. I agree that the 100-400 would be a very good purchase. Especially, since you will not have to switch lenses constantly which results in all the dust settling on your sensor....

I believe that you will be well served with the 70-200 on the 5D and the 100-400 on the 40D.

  9. Am I missing something?

I would expect the 200 2.0 IS to have better IQ than the 70-200 2.8 IS. However, that zoom is quite amazing, only overshadowed by the 300 2.8 IS, my absolute favorite so far. I don't see why you would spend 6K on the 200, when you could get both the 300 and the 70-200 for that price....

  10. I use a multi-coated $200 polarizer and have discovered that IQ with my 17-40 and 24-105 takes a toll. So I rarely use the polarizer now. I am not sure why this is especially since I am using a high quality filter. The only polarizer I have come to like with my digital SLRs is the drop-in polarizer for my 300 2.8 IS lens, maybe it does not have the problems because it is inside the lens? - beats me....
  11. Crop sensor: 17-40 4.0 L and 300 2.8 IS L

    Full frame: 24-105 4.0 L and 300 2.8 IS L

I know the 300 is a monster, but I consistently get amazing color, sharpness and compression with it, so for landscapes and wildlife it is my favorite lens. The 70-200 2.8 IS L is also another favorite, but you said pick one zoom so the 24-105 is more versatile (especially when coupled with the 300). At least with the 5D and 40D all of these lenses are hand-holdable.

  12. I have a ThinkTank Glass Taxi which will hold my 300 2.8 IS (hood inverted) with the 5D attached, or the 40D with the 70-200 2.8 IS with the lens hood extended. I use it as a backpack with one of these rigs in it and will have the other around my neck, while holding the lens from the tripod collar. The 70-200 is almost a featherweight compared to the 300, so it is around my neck most of the time. This set-up has definitely toned my arms, but in my opinion it is worth it. Why have good glass if you don't use it? I am considering building some kind of shoulder harness so I can hook the tripod collar onto it to take some of the weight off my arms on longer trips.
