  1. Actually, I've never really done "street photography". That's why I wanted to see the type of lens that people like to use. I wasn't sure if you would use a telephoto or the wide angle. But I guess it now depends on the perspecive you want to "catch", doesn't it?

I find this type of thread very helpful, and educational, especially when looking for equipment. Because people will also show you how nice the lens can work.

  2. Personally, I think that there are many photographers who can take equally fine photos with manual cameras. Maybe not the Nikkormat, but then I'm not really familiar with it. But I'll bet you that there is some great still work being done with the old FM2 yet.

Shun might not agree, I think you are more of a Auto focus/digital buff anyway. But I believe a photographer who doesn't have to rely on all the Stuff Rob mentioned in his post is a better photographer. I might even say his "art" is purer

  3. Eric,

Your full of wind. You obviously have no idea about what you talking about

It's a fine portrait. The only thing underexposed is the background, and that's not part of the photo. The man is perfectly exposed. Great expression, color and detail in his face. I too find my self wondering what "the story" behind the photo is. I suppose that's what it's meant to do. It's like reading a page from a novel, but not knowing the whole story. I want to know more

  4. I have a quick question regarding the rules of of the forum.

Are we allowed to ask questions about a photo on a "No Words"

thread? What about make a critique? shouldn't critiques be made only

    when someone asks for them?

I know they are dumb questions but I see critiques being made on a

NO Words, and I did it also. I jsut wanted to know the guidelines.

    Thanks

  5. Hi Rob

I thought it was you sister also. I actually like the look on her face, as though she is frustrated. I can see his eye fine. As for the backgroun, getting rid of it will certainly help, but it's light enough that it doesn't cause that much distraction.

I just noted it was a "NW" thread, so why is Darin giving a critique? Sorry about that, but I like it

  6. Thanks for all the information. I do think that I'll stick with the Nikon brand, but I'm going to pick up a nice used F100 to start with. Since it will use my AIs lens also, it makes sense. Plus I can load both bodies with different film.

I really thought about what Josh said about the Canon lens and body, but I really like my 24mm and don't see a need to replace it with a zoom, even a good zoom. For me the lens I want is the 80-200 f/2.8 AFS Vr lens. It's a focal length I feel I need more. It also seem to be a nice lens. So After I get my F100, I'll save a few more months and get one of those. Then save for the next lens...:)

Thank you all for your thoughts

  7. I was really interested in some day getting some of the new Nikon

lens that are being announced. I've been saving some money, but I'm

a little concerned that the new lens will not fit my F3. I called

Nikon and they were really helpful, they told me that the reason

they were going to the new "G" mount was to save weight, and make

the lens more competitive price wise. I can understand that, but it

got me to think that maybe I should use some of the money I've saved

and invest in a new body, or a used new body if you know what I

mean. I only have a 3 lens, and they are AI or AIS lens so they

would work with the newer film bodies. I could always keep my F3 as

    a back up.

I looked at the N80 and didn't feel it was right for me. It felt to

light weight after hauling around my F3. I've seen the F100 on eBay

and it's not "too expensive" used. I'll have to save some more for

another lens, but Life is a trade off.

So I guess my question is: Does it make sense to buy a new film

body, like the F100 with all it's features, so I can pick up a few

of the new lens Nikon is talking about. Another Bonus is I know the

F100 will also be able to take advance of the VR features also,

    where my F3 won't.

    Thanks for you help

I think Lisa did a nice job with her F2. I too would have liked her to move closer, I find myself yearning to see more of the children on the docks. But then that just me.

But I do have a question.

Some of the memebers talked about the background trees, and a "dark shadowie" area. When I looked at the first photo, I didn't really see why that would matter since it doesn't seem to be important to the photo's main subject. So my question, from a learning point of view, is since the background doesn't matter why would we care? Or are you guys saying that if she had been closer and set the lens at a ffaster f-stop to blur out the whole background it wouldn't have been better?

I don't want to seem stupid, but I just want to understand

    Thanks

  9. Hi Carl,

What is the score thingy all about? I know I can be dense, but I don't understand.

Thanks I can always count on you to explain it too me, without getting angry..:)

  10. Leanne,

You may be a better photgrapher than I am, but I never attacked you. I only stated I felt you were wrong, unless everytime someone disagrees with you they are attacking you. All I asked is what you meant by a remark "A fashion....". I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you meant.

The more I read you posts, it's you who is arguing with people because they disagree with your views. Even Henk said he saw what rob was going for, but it needed more "pop" to truly bring it out. Then he tried to help Rob with it, but then Henks that kind of a person.

How many times does Rob have to thank you for your views? Isn't he and I and the others who liked the photo, with some alterations allowed to disagree?

Jeff, I thought your first post was very informative, stating your views and showing us a photo to support them. But did I miss something? I thought I read Rob's last remarks and he thanked you? Did I read some of these posts, and aren't there members who did like it? Yes, more pop maybe, or maybe not. Lighter eyes, yes. I think it would have been better in color, where there would be more contrast in the eye color. But that's me. I still like it. Or have I lost that right?

I may not be a portrait photographer, or know "What makes a portrait" in your view. But I know what I like. I too studied photography in school, I'm far from an expert, but I believe I'm also allowed an opinion.

Personally I like the qualities of the photo. I looked at the baby in the stroller, and really didn't see it as a portrait. Why? Becasue even though it's nice and contrasty and sharp, and shows some background, a ballon and a glass. It tells me nothering of the baby. All I see is a kid with a "Blank Look". As that may be your idea of a portrait, it isn't mine. But then I do believe we are both entitled to our own views. If I saw both "in a book", I wouldn't spend the time on yours. There is only a baby in a stroller. with two ballons and a glass, and a rather blank vacant look. My professor, and the books I've read, always said the portrait should tell us about the subject through his expression and or environment. For me Rob's is closer to the mark. BUT it's only my opinion

I'm sorry, I don't like to get in to arguments, as they are counterproductive. But Just because someone disagrees with your views, doesn't mean they are wrong or mean. It doesn't meant they don't know what makes a good portrait. It means, as my college proff. said, photography is a subjective art form.

  11. Sorry about that,

Rob I thought it was nice. I like the look on his face and his overall look tells me about the boy. I would like to see it lighter, and less "soft". I don't like the thing in the botom corner either.

  12. Hi Leanne

I'm not an expert on portraits, or photography by that count. But hey, you seem to be lowering yourself to Josh's level. It's not my post but it clearly asks for constructive critique, and well, I don't think arguing with a child like Josh is very constructive, is it? look at his history and photos, why would you lower yourself.

I also don't think the post by Grant would be constructive. I don't even know why it's not a portrait. But then again I'm a just Nikon newbie, and your stuffs way cool. But your wrong on how you handled this, sorry
