Dear readers,
A friend of me from Nigeria (I live in Holland) has asked me to take
pictures of a church-event (his son will be baptised). I think this
will be a nice opportunity for me to learn and develop in photography.
I have some questions "spooking" through my mind:
* Equipment set 1: SLR 35mm man. focus, 35-70 (3.5)and a 70-210 tele
(4.5)with dedicated flash (adjustable up/down right/left)
** Equipment set 2: Medium format 2.25/2.25 (6x6) with a 80MM, no
flash, external lightmeter. For both camera's a steady tripod is
available.
NOTE: This will be a colorful event, the guests are mainly Nigerian
people with colorfull traditional dresses and also dance/movement.
Main subject however is the baby.(and his family)
Q1 FLASH OR NOT: What is the best way to use flash in these kind of
occassions, or is it better to use a fast film only? I like to make
close-ups of baptising and "scenery impressions"
Q2 RATING FILM: I heard about "rating" a 400 film let's say at 800. I
think this way when I don't have enough light, I still can make good
pictures without flash, will this trick cost me quality of the pics?
If yes, how much?(eg, same as a normal 400 grain?).
Q3 FILM PACKAGE: What kind of "film-package" would you recommend to
take with me? I am learning to appreciate the quality of slidefilm
(100), but will this be a good choice for this?
Q4: Do you have any words of wisdom about 'behaving' as a
photographer in such an occassions, eg. being not a pain in the ass,
or an attention-drawer:)
If you have some advise about one or more of these questions, please
share your knowledge! Thank you so much,
Bart

HI,
Here I am again. I just received the details about the should today, and I think there is good and bad news.
bad news: There will be a lot of TL-light (you know, these long white tubes, giving a greenish light on you photo)
good news: I can use a 50mm 1.7 on my 35
I think I have to get some kind of filter (I use Cokin) to compensate for the TL (will cost me stops)? Or can I use flash to neutralize if this is alowed?
I talked with my friend and he says that more kids will be baptized that ceremony (thank you R.J.) He also told me that taking some pictures during the ceremony is o.k.
Well, I will pose some results after the work is done! And I have a few days left (sunday). in the mean time I will check this forum daily.
greetings Bart
ps: My med. form. is a good old Pentacon 6 with a set of Carl Zeiss Jena lenses, so no TRL.
