Thanks, Karl.
Seems like slides don't need color adjustment after that!

Hi William,
As far as I know Minolta Scan Dual IV (being an entry level film scanner from Minolta) doesn't have hardware infrared Digital ICE technology which means you have
to "clean" the film by yourself after scanning in editing software,
it is so painful. Both Coolscans do have Digital ICE, Canon FS4000US has its own FARE technology. If you look for
competitor to Coolscan (V/5000), go for top Minolta's model - Minolta Scan Elite 5400, it is
worth comparing and has everything one needs. About Scan Dual IV I am sure it is good machine except two
things - (a bit) not enough resolution for high-res film and lack of
Digital ICE. You can compare this model to the Benq ScanWit 2720s
model - 2700 dpi and no ICE and also cheaper. But ICE is life-saving!!!
Hope this helps,
Ruslan.

Hi Ernest,
Believe me, both the Minolta Scan Elite II and Scan Elite 5400 use ifrared channels to remove dust. I am the owner of Scan Elite 5400.
Look at the price - film scanners without hardware dust removal via IR channel cost much less. Coolscan V, 5000 and Minolta 5400 all use hardware Digital ICE technology (digital doesn't mean 'sotware' , although it is of course done by software after IR signal received).
What is more impressive particularly in 5400 model that it additionaly uses hardware grain dissolver, wich eliminates digital ICE artefacts in some cases. It improves sharpness (!) in some cases and allows one to scan Kodachromes w/o artefacts. However, scan times with grain dissolver increase several times because it is truly hardware option, namely, it is mat plate being placed between the lamp and film to scan.
Minolta 5400 is an very impressive scanner, especially when it comes to ICE+GD. Not a sign of smothening after dust removal ICE procedure!
Hope this helps.

Hmmm.... I would be very surprised to hear that 5400 unit without lines really does exist:) Some people (of course, you know) exchanged their units several times with no effect.
The question is how strong the lines are. Everything else in this
scanner is as proposed and amazing.
And lines should be an issue to change your mind before buying 5400, not after...
Also, exchange is not easy procedure for me now.
With negatives (the only films I am currently using) there is almost
no lines problem.
Regards,
Ruslan.

Hello Richard,
Making three variations of the same scan
1. 16 bit -> assign Adobe RGB (1998)
2. 16 bit -> assign Dimage 16 bit ->convert to Adobe RGB (1998)
3. 16 bit linear -> assign Dimage 16 bit linear ->convert to Adobe RGB (1998)
I have noticed strong increase of the noise in the raw 1<2<3.
The idea is to make scan as in the procedure '1'. Colors are slightly different in all procedures, but so is noise level.
I see a lot of noise in shadows in blue channel (inverted->blue) when scanning negatives in the procedure '2' and '3', but can hardly notice it in '1'. I hope this can affect the lines level as it decreases overall noise, in negatives and in slides as well.
Your lines are too strong, and they hopefully can be reduced by not using 16 bit linear procedure and following conversions.
Still, it is only my observations...
Hope this helps.
Ruslan.

Hi Len Gee,
the color in negatives is much superior with Silverfast and 5400 than DimageScan. Add 16-bit levels/curves/shadows/highlight/color refinement before making final scan. You can try SF.. Really hard to get back to the original software after SF:)
