  1. I have recently bought an iBook with OSX Tiger. I need to install my Minolta Scan Dual II on it

but the drivers available on konicaminolta.com only go up to an earlier edition of OSX and

wouldn't work. Does anybody know how I can get round this or whether minolta are likely to

ever get the new drivers up. I need the scanner to archive loads of slides and really can't

    afford a new one.

Thanks in advance for any help

  2. Your mention of low light acion suggest D1X to me, as it has a better AF system, and brighter viewfinder. A recent PP review of all the major sub $1600 D-SLRS put the D70 second to the Eos 10D just because of noise and it's autofocus. Still a great camera though!
  3. Since you have a D70, why not go in to a dealer with both, take some shots then take them home and print them up. See which is better, if either/ you can tell. The expense and time of this will be worth it if it helps you get the right lens. Alos consider whether you will ever want to use the lens on a film camera, or full frame dslr, such as the Kodak 14n. Also consider how important the extra length will be on the DX lens. Personally I'd assume that the extra difficulty of making the longer lens is balanced out by the fact that it is designed strictly fo digital, and that the quality will be fairly similar on both lenses.

  4. The quality is far better. I had a Tokina 28-70 f2.6-2.8, in terms of quality it was very good. I replaced a 28-80d, cheap lens with it, the comparison was ridiculous. I just bought a 50mm 1.8, it's even better. Sorry not to have any pictures to post, my photos and scans are in the UK, I'm in LA.

  5. I've heard it said that the colour cast at high shutter speed was an internet rumour started by some slightly scary canon fans and clever use of photoshop. I know two wrongs don't make a right, but do two internet rumours cancel each other out?

Anyway, as bodies (taking the features and handling as "body" and any softwear/ccd issues as "film" to ease my F90 using mind) I've had my hands on both and would get the D70. Unless you plan to buy some big glass and need a vertical shutter release it feels and handles (for me) a lot better than the D100, and the viewfinder seems fairly similar on both. Add this to the added features and souped up meter and you have a winner.

As for a 70-300, which one do you mean? I'd get the ED version, or an old, battered but optically clean 80-200 f2.8. This may be a good way to spend the money saved from the D100. I fear, but do not know of for sure, chromatic aberation problems with the cheaper 70-300G lens or old entry level 70-300D. Not sure about this, please someone correct me if I'm wrong. Certainly I was never happy with the performance of my 70-240, which was very similar to these.

Oh, and you don't make it clear what filter you meant, but if you were talking about a skylights get two, one for each lens, leave them on! Then look at them in a years time. If your anything like me you'll be pleased they were there.

Hope this helps, I'm sure you'll be happy with either, I know I would be.

  6. It's macro at 35mm only, so not being able to turn the macro ring away from then is definitely a good sign! Sold mine a few years ago so can't remeber about the button, but that sounds like the catch is broken. Not a huge problem, not sure how easy/ cheap it would be to get repaired. It's a great lens, should have kept mine, wanted 28mm though. Before anybody tells me, yes I know 35mm is a very similar focal length to 28, and I know I should have got a prime even if I did really want the extra width. Just didn't know then!
  7. Slightly off the point, but related, I was wondering how it would work on a Fuji S2 or the S3 when it arrives. I assume that it would be fine as they have the smaller sensors too, but was wondering if nikon had done something to the electricals to stop this and boost their own sales with a range of made for digital lenses. HAs anybody tried or heard for sure. Any DX lens will do!
  8. Having listed weight as an issue for you I doubt that another F4 really apeals to you. The I would prefer an F/N90(X/S or not) to an F80, its specs are very similar but it is slightly more robust. Also, for somwe this is an issue for others not, it would take any old MF lenses, which an F80 would not. Also have you considered an F801s/N8008s (definitely the S), very similar to the F90, but smaller, older and cheaper. Alternatively, and probably to ask a stupid question, why not take the MD4 of the F3?
  9. Leys not get too excited about this. The Kodak DCS14n got killed when it first came out. I saw results from one correctly used in a studio that blew away anything else I'd seen from digital apart from the kodak digital back on a Hassy H1. Lets wait and see if this problem is enuine, widespread and causes difficulties under common shooting conditions when the camera is handled by good photographers. By this I mean no disrespect to whoever took this picture, just as I don't know them or their work, I'd rather wait till someone I trust, or a large number of people, report the same problem.

  10. This is exactly the problem with both digital cameras and internet discussion forums. In fact of the internet full stop. Someone has a problem with one camera, suddenly people are talking about nation wide product recalls. Somebody says the camera is a rip off compoared too the ......... (insert brand) version, blah blah blah. You can't judge a camera till you have seen it and results from it taken by a number of photographers. Great to hear the views of people who have used it, but definitley not to hear speculation from people who haven't.
  11. Get two (grey import) lenses from B&H, the 28 f2.8 and the 50 f1.8. I'm a stident two and am swapping my zoon (a tokina 28-70 2.8) for these two when I go to New York next week. Inexpensive and much better than most zooms.
  12. Its fantastic. What does it matter who made it. And 200 dollars is cheap. I've just paid 195 to have mine mended, the shutter unit needed replacing, but yours should be cheaper to have serviced, the lens casp is just on a spring.

I took mine on a six month trip to China and used it heavily. The slides I shot on it are indistiguisaheble from the ones I took on a Nikon F90 with 28-70 f2.8 or 50mm 1.8, and it is much more discreet and pocketable than either of those combinations. Its a real gem and I think truly in the "Leica mould"!

  13. I'm pretty sure it is not the shutter as the line seems to go up sharply after it has turned right (on my monitor anyway). Unfortunately I can't offer an alternative. Sorry for not being very useful. I can see why your wife loves the shot!
