I have developed my hobby into a small business too. it will take lots of energy for it to become financially profitable. I would write up a business plan. Having the equipment off course is the main purchase. Having GOOD equipment too is a must. If you sell a product, the product has to be worthy of selling. You can only leave a first impression ONCE. If you disappoint a customer, they will not come back for repeat business. You need a marketign plan too, a sign in the window stating you do portrait photography will not suffice.
This site has excellent links and wonderful photographers that are all willign to help you. Seek out some photographers that resemble your style, or a style you like to create or produce....and start askign them questions. Asking a person that loves to photograph cows, clouds or architecture will likely not guide you in the right direction, asking a person that also produces portrait photography very likely will able to help you and and communicate with you about his or her passion.
Good Luck.
