With the prices of used medium format equip these days, why buy new? I just bought a 501CM with 80mm lens and two A12 backs plus a 45 prism non-metered finder for $1,500.00 in almost new condition.. Let's see i'd have gone to B&H and got this same equip new... about $5,000... it's your money....

try www.lexjet.com I use Torchon and really like it. Highly textured. I have also used photorag 308 and like it. I think you can get a sample pack from lexjet....

Have you considered the Microtek 120tf? I own one and love it! No Digital Ice but I honestly don't care. It comes with Silverfast AI and HDR which for my money makes it a "no brainer"... You'll save money too.

I shoot a bunch of XPAN and LOVE IT! I have the earlier version but plan to upgrade to the II as I want the Multi capability. If you don't care about the multi capability save some money...
I now own the Microtek 120tf which has software written to scan the xpan easily! I love this scanner!
My portfolio has a number of xpan images on this site. Only the last few are with the 120tf all other were scanned with an Epson Flatbed which frustrated me in its quality.
I have found myself more and more drawn to shoot the xpan. I think it is like anything else the more experience you have the more easily you "see" that type of imgage. The camera is easy to use and makes very sharp chromes. I'm a big fan.
My site has many other xpan images.. www.barclayphoto.com check the recent work archives...

Terrific feedback folks! Thank you. No doubt I'm in love with Chromes on a light table. I do have an excellent Medium Format scanner already for my XPAN stuff.. so I'm making the purchase! Thanks to all you guys for spending MY money wisely! :)

Frank you make me laugh and feel validated all at the same time! I see digital as a marketing play for the greedy companies that make the stuff. Sure it is terrific for the point and shoot crowd who what snapshots but for us who love the craft of making images... not sure. I have a Sports Illustraed friend who swears by his 1d Mark II and has sold all of his film gear! He says digital rules in his world... Me I just love chromes on a light table!

I have a chance to purchase a very clean 501CM with 80mm lens two
A12 backs and a Hassy 45 prism. $1,500. I'm a serious 35mm shooter,
mostly nature with my Canon 1v's and "L" glass. My plan is to start
doing more portrait stuff for some extra cash. Is this the right
thing to do or should I embrace the digital reveloution with a 20D?
I love film and am not considering the switch to digital for my
nature stuff... I've always wanted a Hassy but I don't want to end
up with one if it does not make sense... Interested in your
thoughts.

I'm a big fan of anything RRS. You just can't go wrong. Either would be just fine but for me Joe at RRS is just great.

Get the 100mm USM. I own the 180mm and have owned the 100mm sold it to get the 180 and wish I had kept it. I'll own the 100 again. Very sharp and a much more practical focal length than the 50. Now if you don't have a 50 or want a fixed 50 for your kit by all means make it a macro lens...

Don't know where you are thinking of going but I've been to a Smoky workshop with Tony Sweet www.tonysweetphotography.com that was wonderful. I've been to other Tony Sweet workshops as well and have enjoyed each one. I don't know about these people but their price for the workshop is really not bad as it includes hotel!

I own both the Nature and Pro Trekker's. I LOVE my Pro Trekker! It is much more comfortable to carry as a pack even though it is bigger than the Nature Trekker. That said I've still kept the Nature Trekker for certian occasions. Good Luck.

Just picked up the new Manfrotto brochure and sure enough they have what appears to be an imitation B1 style head. They have two versions, the 3435 and 3436 both with or without quick release plates. I called Bogen and they say they are on the boat as we speak. Should be in stores to try in early July. The list prices will be $330 for the smaller 3435 version and $370 for the larger 3436. I would expect prices at B&H to be discounted 30-40%. The ball is teflon coated for a "smoother" feel.
Am I crazy to purchase a very clean Hassy 501CM system?
