  1. yesterday i was shooting, recording my images as both raw files and small jpgs.

I was using a SanDisk Extreme III 2.0GB compact flashcard.

While I was shooting, I was able to review my images by viewing them on the back

of the camera. Everything was going along smoothly. It was not the first card I

had filled that day, and the other ones I had downloaded already into my mac...

like I said, everything appeared fine and dandy.

However, when I put this card into the reader, it said there were no images. I

could deduce that the card was not empty, but it appeared empty and could not be

read. When I put it back into the camera, it also showed-up as "no images". Crap!

I was able to finally get the images using SanDisc's application "RescuePro"

File Recovery Utility, so I guess thats fine, except the recovered images have

messed-up file numbers, and not all of them have jpgs. I recovered all the raw

files so thats cool, but what the heck?

Its not the first time this has happened with a SanDisk Extreme III 2 G card (I

have two of them). It happened on the other disc on my last shoot. Its never

happened on the Sandisc Ultra II 2.0 GB card I also have. The card itself is not

completely bad, because today I put the card back in my camera, shot a bunch of

test stuff and downloaded it just fine.

Incidentally, when I download the cards I use a lexar usb compact flash reader.

I download them, then delete the card, empty the trash, eject the card, put it

back in the camera, and format the card using the camera.

Any ideas about what is going in here?

  2. Yes, PRS is still in business, though I dont think they have a website. Their number is (323)467-1212. They are always my first choice for rentals; its all about their great attitude. I understand what Ellis is saying here, but I've found PRS a lot more willing to work with me regarding a reasonable deposit. Plus, I just find the chaos at Samy's rental counter (on Fairfax), to be super annoying.
  3. Its been said already, but the 7b is a battery pack best suited to location work. The modeling light isnt bright (saves battery) and you need to turn it on after every shot. I have seen assistants hold flashlights for focusing. Thats not the worst solution... The best thing is to use studio equipment like Pro 7's in the studio and keep the 7b's for location. The 7b is a wonderful light source but its not exactly the best tool for all situations.
  4. Jason, I'm a student at Brooks and I'm from Seattle. Check-out the Photo program at

Seattle Central Community College. Its one of the best and its definitely cheaper and more

respected than the Art Institute. Many great photographers I know who work in Seattle at

Amazon.com, Getty Images, REI, Eddie Bauer, all went to SCCC. Just check it out if you

want to stay inexpensive and in Seattle. But one note... SoCal is a pretty nice change!! I'll

be in Seattle next week if you want to meet for coffee and talk about Brooks. So far its

expensive but worth it for me. peace. Andrew andrewstiles@yahoo.com

  5. this all sounds good, but there is one thing I might add. You may want to get your shutter

speed checked before you go through all this trouble. Most leaf shutters may be +/- 1/3

at certain speeds. If you are going to sort out your effective ISO, you should start by

knowing the exact speed your shutter is working at. My 210mm, for example, shoots at 1/

36 when the indicated speed is 1/30. This is 1/3 slow. Good to know.

    Good luck!
