  1. Hah, lots of varying opinions here. I think what I might do is load up my pack with all my gear and the Sinar and take a day hike up a fairly rough part of the trail and see how I do. Part of what is appealing to me about taking the large format is the amount of time it will take to set up when I want to take a picture, nomatter what gear I pack I know it is going to be hard to get to and I will be forced to take off my pack to set up, if I am using my medium format or my Olympus it will take more time for me to get all the gear out than to actually take the picture! For whatever reason, this makes me feel less justified in making the exposures, especially when I am travelling with a friend and we will have to build up the momentum again for a 3 min stop. However, if I am using the large format, I can feel comfortable taking my time with the image and instead of having my photography be a bump in the trail, make it feel more like part of the experience.
  2. Hi, I was just wondering if it would be worth it to carry about my

Sinar F-1 camera along with my Gitzo G1226 tripod and Bogen compact

ball head for a 3-5 day backpacking trip. I would probably only bring

about 3-5 film holders because as it is I don't like to stop for

photos too much and would rather make the few I take perfect. I know

this is alot of weight to carry around on my back consitently but I

usually travel fairly light (especially in the summer) and only pack

about 25 lbs., which is already much lighter than my normal school

backpack. My other options would be to bring my Bronica Etrs-i with

my 50mm and 75mm lenses, or my OM-2n with my 24mm and 50mm lenses,

and most likely the same tripod. However, because of the density of

the woods I would shy away from the 35mm. I will probably be printing

the photos no larger than 16x20 (if I get any I like) and am not sure

that the film size would make a difference or whether I would need

the view camera's tilts and shifts, but there are some nice waterways

and the view camera's small apertures would allow my to get nice long

    exposures. What are your opinions?

  3. I was actually referring to all of them! I never knew there was such a variety and history to these different pack films. Although they sound nice because of the weight issues, I am only 17 and really can't afford to pay the extra money for the convenience now, I guess I will just have to wait and pay it 3-fold when I'm older and have back issues. :)

    Thanks everyone for replying!

  4. I have recently bought a Sinar F-1 4x5 and while looking for 4x5 film

for it I noticed that many of the films come both in sheet form and

in a pack form. I understand how the sheet film works, but I still

can't quite figure out what the difference is with the pack film.

Would anyone care to clarify? Does it require a different kind of

    film back?

    Thanks.

  5. I recently purchased an ETRSi along with a 50mm lens, 75mm lens, and 2 backs, but no directions, off of eBAY. Now that I have it there are a few things which I can't quite figure out...

1st. There are three positions for the ring around the shutter button I think the first one is locked and the third one is on but what is the one inbetween for?

2nd. When I put the camera into mirror lockup and wind the crank the door that is between the mirror and the film back doesnt go up all the way and seems to be blocking part of the lens opening (this happens with both lenses)

3rd. Finally, and the one that is worrying me the most. I can't seem to make the camera fire except on mirror lockup and multiple exposure. When I wind it on normal I here the click as the shutter is reset etc but the crank keeps winding and doesnt stop (this is without film in the back.) When I try to press the shutter release it only depresses half-way and with a good deal of resistance.

Is there something wrong with the camera or do I just need to put film in it?

    Thanks!

  6. Hey Jamie,

I have read through everyone elses reviews and am an OM system user myself. What i would say is, dont go out and spend the 250$ or so it will cost for you to get a Pen FT just yet, if you want something small and compact you could look into something like a Olympus 35 RC or a Olympus 35 RD rangefinder camera for fairly cheap. With the extra money you have from not investing in the expensive Pen you could get your hands on a used OM-1 MD or OM-2. Later if you decide that you are interested in doing all of your own processing and black and white then consider getting the Pen because it will save you money with the film and is just a great camera. However, when you do decide to get one make sure it is in impecable condition so you can get your moneys worth out of it. I have gone through 5 OM bodies (from updating not breaking down!) and have been very happy with the cameras and the Zuiko optics. I have used both old and new nikons and canons but none of them felt as solid in my hands as a good OM-1. Definatly worth the investment.
