  1. Brian! Me too used to use Opera in Windows and Conqueror in Linux and was a fanatic W3C fan, but after receiveing lots of complaints from visitors of my websites (not actually mine, my clients') ended up installing 3 versions of IE on my system and checking my html, css,js pages in each version.<br>

One of my websites has about 1000 unique visitors per day well distributed around the world definitely not comparable to a giant like photo.net but my stats page gives a good idea of how popular IE is, 92.77% of the visitor use IE! there I have to answer a few hundreds of people, how can you answer to tens of thousands of complaints (stated or unstated) here?<br>

Maybe this particular problem only happens in my particular verison of IE (6.0.26) but generally what I want to say is that in a highly user oriented website like photo.net I don't think it is a good idea to ask majority of users to use what the developer uses.<br><br>

    sincerely

  2. I like the reveresed order the grey background and flowing layout, but there is a bug: when the thumbnails are loading if I click on 'Details' the loading stops! (IE 6.0.26) that is very annoying, I have to wait for the whole page to load before clicking 'Details'. also I like to be able to bookmark my folder with details as before (sending parameter &ratings=true) it doesn't work anymore.
  3. Carl, I remember a long time ago Brian said he's going to implement the 'greatest average standard deviation' for TRP, I've been waiting for it since then!<br><br>

What I really like to see is "full view/thumbnail view ratio" for each photo, that would give a good clue about how eye catching my photos are ;)

  4. Hello,

Today when I checked my folder (with rating/size info on) noticed

number of ratings on one of my photos which used to be 10 has

increased to 11, clicked on the photo and there was also a new

comment, surprisingly the number of ratings was back to 10, I clicked

back and it was back to 10 in folder view too! I suspected the author

of the comment must be the rater and contacted him, he told me he did

give me a rating but it was not there, even he had tried to rate

again but received "you have already rated this photo".

I know the new system deletes ratings from very high and low raters

but because this is the first time that this member is rating my

photos, he has a below 5 average and the rating got deleted

immediately it appeared a bit suspicous, decided to report it here.

if it's necessary I can send more info about the photo and the rater

    directly to moderator's email.

    Sincerely

  5. Thanks Gary and M for your answers, I will consider all things you mentioned, I can estimate most of these except the photographer's fee which I don't have any idea about (this is actually my first serious job of this kind), can you give me some numbers, how much would you charge as "photographer's fee" if this job was offered to you? They have asked me to give them an estimated price before we go into the contracting process.
  6. Hello friends!<br><br>

I have just received a job offer and they have asked me to give them

    my pricing.

I don't have any idea of how much I should charge them.<br><br>

It's a museum in Netherlands, They want me to travel to a city about

    200km from

my place, reside in a hotel for a few days, go to an ancient site

    take some interior

and outdoor shots with regards to their instructions and send it to

    them via email.

they may want changes and I may need to repeat the hotel->site->shoot-

    >hotel->send

    a few times.<br>

HOW and HOW MUCH should I charge them?<br><br>

    Thanks in advance

  7. "When I looked at this pic it had a 4.20/4.50 rating, which is about the same as what you have given (avg) to others that you have rated. Everyone has their opinion, just like you."<br><br>

Please! how can I make this clear ?! this is not about why people give me 4s 3s and 2s which is definitely their right, it's about why the error is so high that I get 5.8 average and then 3.8.<br>

and again it's not about how the ratings affects my feelings about my photos because it doesn't at all. Please read Brian's comment about what is the intention of the rating system.<br><br>

Brian! I didn't know we are back to 0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 system this is much better. and about my photo I think this is a rare example, this photo started with two 7s and 6s first time and in such cases where people are uncertain about how to rate the photo they become biased by other's ratings so it came up to 5.8 average, next time it started with two 3s and for the same reason now it has stoppen around 4.5. the system is working fine for most of the photos and that is how it should be.<br>It was nice if we could have a system where photos with higher standard deviation in their ratings could get more ratings automatically to get to a more realistic average, but I know this can't be on the list of things to do with all those more important things on the list I'm just thinking about an ideal system ;)<br>

Sorry if this thread is becoming like common endless threads about rating system, this was not my intention. if this thread is becoming bothersome delete it, I've got my answer. sincerely

  8. Brian, thanks for the prompt answer, Your reasoning was right if every photo was going to get 20-30 ratings, but after 10 ratings photos come out of the "critique request" cycle and if they have low rating they will have very little visibility and therfore little chance to get more ratings. in this example my previous posting ended the cycle with 5.8 average I had enough visibility to get many more ratings (and you know most of the ratings after the cycle are high ratings from those who like your photo in the top photos page) so it could be a photo with around 6 average on first three pages in top photos but now even if my other two ratings are 7 I get around 4.8 average and my photo will be forgotten in the dark sides of photo.net archive.<br><br>

I think it is time to increase the 10 ratings limit of the photo critique cycle regarding the increase in total number of raters. or having a dynamic limit depending on the ratings standard deviation of each photo (don't take this seriously ;) )

    Thanks

  9. I always suggest others not to take the ratings seriously at all and

take photos instead this has worked for me in the past year but

should admit that things are getting a little weird these days on

photo.net maybe it's due to user inflation. seems the number of users

who don't understand the meaning of ratings have increased too much

and their ratings has enough weight so that they don't fade among

other resonable ratings. look at this photo:<br>

    <a href="http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?

    photo_id=2422738">http://www.photo.net/photo/2422738

    </a><br>

please honestly tell me should this get a 3.8 average?<br>

even more interesting is that I posted this photo twice, the first

time it got around 5.8 average (10 ratings) I deleted/reposted this

    time it got 3.8!<br>

This doesn't have anything to do with my ego, I post what I think is

good and ratings never change my mind but what is our goal in posting

photos here? isn't it to show them to others? and you know what 3.8

    average means: no visibility.<br>

Brian! I know what you mean when you say this is a commercial site

and we decide how it should work, I respect that and honestly think

you have done a very good job so far, just want to tell you that

things are not working as smooth as before.

    sincerely

  10. Hello Everybody,

When I shoot something against a very bright background like a head

shot with the sky as background

I do spot metering on the subject and the subject becomes well

    exposed and the sky is

    rendered plain

white as expected but the contrast of the subject decreases very much

(like when you photograph something from

behind a dirty glass), why does this happen? does it have something

to do with physical behaviour of light or

it is just a problem with digital cameras?

    Thanks in advance.

  11. If a user deletes a photo which is also submitted for critique it

seems the critique request remains there for sometime and if you rate

that deleted photo in "Critique Photos" page you'll see a page

saying "Insert Failed" and you can't rate any more photos, even going

out and coming back doesn't solve the problem and you'll be stick to

the deleted photo and can't go any further. I faced this problem

    several time.<br>

just for information of restless PNet moderators ;)<br><br>

  12. "it seems every angle of every image has been shot"<br> I don't beleive in that. possiblilities are infinite, in better words human's creativity is infinite, possibilities are not just every possible position multiplied by every possible angle, there are many many other parameters involved. moreover photography is a kind of communication like speaking, you never cease speaking wisely and beautifully because "every wise and beautiful word has been uttered before" which is not true but more likely than your statement.
  13. I have a suggestion which may be hard to implement and perhaps needs considerable

resources on the server but will solve problems which Bryan is talking about:<br>

We can have a voting system for category, I mean the photographer initially only

suggests a category (perhaps with a little more weight than others' vote) and

viewers will have a dropdown list of categories to suggest a category for the

photo along with their rating and commenting and the photo will be listed

in the category with more votes.<br><br>

I think it is very easy for the commenters and raters to suggest a category

too before clicking submit and photos will receive enough votes for category to

result in a fair decision about which category the photo belongs to.<br><br>

it takes time but older photos will find their category too without

need for manual editing, PNet can send a message to all photographers

to suggest their initial category for their older photos, if the photo has

many ratings and high impression in top pages people will see it and

suggest the correct category if they feel its not categorized correctly.<br><br>

    what do you think ?
