  1. Hello folks

I have occasionally played the role of "UB"; but I wouldn't think of getting into the photo biz (it would ruin the fun of it for me). That, and I despise posed shots, dislike popping-off a flash, and only shoot candid, so I pretty much have that field to myself :) . It takes some fast lenses, but I have them....but that is not what I am thinking about, as I read this thread.

I have an entirely different thought for all to chew on.

For those in this forum that have been married for 10+ years...when is the last time YOU looked at your wedding album?

Yes, we do have a couple of the formal 'posed' photos hanging on the wall, but I personally CANNOT remember the last time I looked at the album. Yes, the kiddies did ask to see; but that has also been awhile ago.

There is no debate that everything is getting expensive; photographers included. Is it because of the above that folks are passing?

  2. Good point, above. The turnover on point-n-shoot digicams seems to be about six months. I did a quick search on my suggestion (Kodak printer) on eBay, and there are a bunch of 'em, NIB, for what you're looking to pay, or less...some, a lot less.

Another internet place to watch is www.edealinfo.com . They put out a daily list of good deals on the net, and there's usually a few digicams.

Good luck. I have been having fun with my (old) panasonic 3.2mpixel, and the kids are enjoying their Kodaks.

  3. Get one of the Kodak combos - the set that comes with the 4X6 printer. They're running around her price range, and it has everything she needs for the next several years.

My daughter and son both have 'em (thanks, Grandparents!) and they enjoy them tremendously.

And the prints are pretty good, too.

  4. Here's some stuff to send a chill up your spine.

    Look at this site:

    http://www.angelfire.com/home/usahsalgonquin/images/algonquin_docked_leghorn_Italy.jpg

compare that AA gun to the photo in Gene's recently-developed camera

My opinion? Same gun, from a 'sunk ship' in Naples harbor, taken by a different camera, from the same ship - the USHS Algonquin...

Sent some shivers up my spine when I saw it.

The 'home page' of the Algonquin (with more photos of the ship)

    http://www.angelfire.com/home/usahsalgonquin/

    SERIOUSLY cool.....

and Gene, you might want to contact the webmaster of the site; his father was the third officer aboard the Algonquin.

  5. Hi again!

Thanks for pointing out the focal difference. Yes, I think I was shooting at infinity. No, I didn't write down what I was shooting at, but considering it was hazy and late in the afternoon, I wouldnt be surprised if it was f5.6, and the depth of field wasn't enough to get the Monument and the cherry trees.

    Thanks!

    Jon

  6. Hi again

I think I have 'found' the problem.

The scanning from Wal-Mart was poor. Attached is the scan right off the CD. Note that its 100% unprocessed by me - havent even rotated the image.

It isn't anywhere near the quality of the printed 4X6.

Oh well......guess I gotta bite the bullet and buy a decent scanner.

    Jon

  7. I thought so, too. Better backlighting would have 'popped' the trees better, imho.

The one that bothers me is the statue of Mason. I don't know why I cut his legs off. I was fairly close; and I wonder if I was suffering from some parallax.

I 'learned' photography as a boy with my father's old Nikon S-2. Yes, now its a collector's item, but in the 70's, it was just his old camera. He had 'moved up' to a minolta xd-11 (which he still uses). But that was quite awhile ago. I've been using minolta SLR's for years, and I just don't think about the parallax 'thing' anymore.

But I do like my kiev 4. FUN camera, and an inexpensive stroll down memory lane.

  8. Inside the finder of a Minolta SRT-201 is a linear readout (across the bottom) that tells you what the camera's shutter is set to.

Well, after several serious jolts (Space Mountain, various other roller-coasters, work related stuff, etc.), the readout strip broke free of the camera and started floating thru the viewfinder.

I figured.....no problem. Just pop the top off of the camera, take the thing out (I never really used it, anyway) and all would be well.

    Well.........................

I never could get the top off of the SRT. I tried. And tried. A good friend of mine tried (he was a watchmaker, too....I figured he'd get if off!).

I lost track of that SRT years ago....but I'm sure the doggone top is STILL on it!!!!

  9. Who's knocking the red lizard?

I STILL like the red lizard....so much so, that when the "big auction site" had a Kiev 4 in red lizard, I bought it!

Some photos will be up soon, but it works fine, and I LIKE my red lizard!

(It was a little strange, btw, with some of the shots with the camera. I was wandering around Washington DC, walking thru some of the memorials and such taking photos of the founding fathers of the USA with a Soviet camera. VERY strange feeling.)
