  1. I'd me very interested in such a backpack as well. Especially if a company is aiming for such a limited market. My goal for next summer is to do true backcountry time. I'll be getting to REI for a non-government issue backpack.

How many days are you wanting to go backcountry? Having done 12-15 miles per day (for days on end) carrying over 60 pounds, you really want to keep the load light.

  2. Carl, great comment. I've got reservations the first week of June and want to bring the longest glass necessary. Would rather do 400 for portability, but will be looking at the 500 very seriously.

Lauren, what lens did you use for that Bison image?

Anis, What lens depends on your goal. Mine (even though it is first time visiting) is to really enjoy and capture the wildlife. Unless you have specific needs, take what you have. Though I rarely use a tripod, I suggest one. (I'll even take mine!) Especially for the early am / sunset images.

This is what my sister used when she visited. Now I just have to pry it from her fingers!

  3. Depends on how much work you want to do. If you are color correcting and sizing, then go with the local or online printer that is cheap. If you need someone else to do the color correction and/or sizing, then pay for a lab to do it.

unless you have a very high speed upload connection, I would look local for printing or overnight a CD of the images. Might take just too long for uploading to be successfull.

  4. I have 2 weekends left in Colorado Springs and I would like to make

the most of them. My photo background is action sports and

modeling. Of course, I have done the nature and landscape

    photography.

I am interested in what "must see" sites people know of. I have

already been to Garden of the Gods -- while I love it there, I don't

feel like going back. Same as Cave of the Winds.

These photos are for myself -- nothing commercial with them. I

would like something challenging and different to photograph. No

ideas though. Just wanting some mental stimulation in the photo

    area. :)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  5. I have been looking for one of these things for almost 2 years. About time someone made one.

I too wonder what happens if you use cards larger than the CD capacity. Should this not become vaporware, I'll simply just not use cards larger than CD capacity. Rather have 20 512 cards that can be burned immediately than many fewer large cards that I cannot burn immedidately.

Would I use it for all my work? Heck no. But for weddings and unforgiving activities where losing any images can be painful, this is a MUST have.

Now, to be able to actually BUY one....

  6. how long are you planning on keeping the stuff together with

Duck/duct tape? Decades? I use it on my gear all the time, esp when

my gaffer tape is used up or elsewhere.

    <p>

IMO, a whatever chemicals given off by tape are the least of my

gear's concerns. The crazy nut using it is a greater risk to

    it. :)

  7. My friend does photography for his work to document different species that might be impacted now and in the future. While he is not concerned about who owns the rights (I'll talk with him later about it), the COMPANY DOES. I cannot convince him to not use his own gear, but the company pays for his vehicle, his film and processing, and everything else that goes into getting the shot.

The SAFEST way to go is to "assume" (as much as I hate that) that if done on company time it belongs to the company. If you want otherwise, you need to have it in the employment agreement.

  8. Bob,

was going to email you privately with this, but thought others can benifit from it. I use www.ecity.net for my web hosting.

When I was goign to put my photo site on-line, I researched a LOT of placed. The shear size of the site was going to get daunting. Plus traffic volume is tough to gauge. Everyone wants to limit how large the site can be on their machines. My local ISP wanted $40 per month for a 15mb site. Even when I offered to buy them a hard drive, they were not interested. (I live in a different town than ecity, so have to have differnt ISP).

Here is what Ecity was able to help me with. First, basic account is $30 per month. This is what i use. I get unlimited storage on-line. I can have it on a Unix or NT machine. 2 email addresses (additionals available). My own domain name. Only real limitation: 500mb per month transfer rate. They have never had a problem with anyone hitting that. I FTP everything in.

You can get additional, higher packages for having your own machine on their system if you want.

They don't specialize in anything except providing the best service possible. Jaque and Tim will work very hard to help you out. They will listen to what you need and make honest suggestions as how to reach it. The only time their system has been down was when someone in the city cut the fiber optic cables to the backbone (entire city was dead!)

Visit www.ecity.net and then call Jaque and tell her I sent you. I would not have 1) put my account there if I did not feel they would best deal with my photographic issues and 2) would not have posted this info if I did not feel they are the best deal around. No, I do not get anything from referals. Ok, maybe I will get a thankyou. Maybe not. :)

Questions? Feel free to contact me directly.

  9. While I do not do nature photography professionally, I do DO sports that way. Since Aug, I have shot at least 15,000 frames. I have 6 that worked their way into my portfolio. Ones that I would call "Great!" shots. Only two that still make me jump up and down with joy.

How many of my 15,000 frames were sellable? A vast majority of them. My clients really like them. See the difference?

  10. It has been some time since I was in Boston and went whale watching. The first time I went, we did not see a single whale (given second trip free). The second time, we did see a lot of whales, and my 200 was just too short to do any good. however, my parents went and had whales all aroudn their boat, and even had one come up right under them on the plank sticking out of the bow! The wide angle on their video cam was not enough to capture it all!

I would take all 3 lenses. You don't know what the weather will do when you are out there. Most likely you will use the 75-300, but if you don't ahve the others, you can't use them. Don't plan on using autofocus. I did not have my A2 at the time but the guys next to me could not get their autofocus to be accurate enough. Much faster to hand focus.

For film, I would take the 200 speed slide with you. You might want to consider kodak's new VS slide film -- I have not tried it yet. My trip I needed 400 speed film. I doubt the 64 will be enough since in addition to the contrast, you have to think about the rocking of the boat. Figure out how much you might shoot, double it, then add another handful to your bag. You will eat film like crazy out there.

Last couple of things. First, be prepared to take pictures of the sun setting. I really enjoy looking at the sunset shots I took -- How often does an American see the sun set on the Atlantic? Second, be prepared to put the camera down and simply enjoy these amazing animals. My rule of thumb was if I was not enjoying myself and being able to appreciate them, I would put the camera down.

    HTH.
