  1. i have the chance to buy a nikkor t-ed 8/360 lens. i would use it on

my linhof super technika V 6x9.

now my question: can i use this lens without any limitations in

focusing? the reason why i'm asking is, i have seen that the focal

flange distance is "only" 261mm. the max. bellows extension of my

super technika is 300mm. are 40mm focusing range enough for shots

with a minimum distance of +15m? i will take no macros and

    portraits.

  2. byeong,

if you go to vienna, austria try

"Manfred Beck. 1060 Wien, Schmalzhofgasse 1a"

the crew is specialized in repair of old cameras (every format), slide- and filmprojectors. the only weakness is that you have to wait one or two weeks until the repair is done. maybe! but they do it perfect at moderate costs.

  3. Hi,

I nedd your help and advice. I found at e*ay this lens:

    http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?

    ViewItem&item=2961774607&category=8277

It is a 6,8/180 Congo. Now my question: Who is the manufacturer and

where does the lens come from? Is this lens really so supersharp and

so rich of contrast - as described - also in the edges? Is this lens

to compare with any other schneider's or rodenstock's with the same

focal length? The seller wrote that the lens is a Tessar-typ. Isn't

    the Tessar an obsolete construction?

I would use it on my Linhof Technika V 6x9. Is this possible or must

    i expect some disadvantages?

    Thanks for your help and

    greetings from Austria,

  4. The new photo backpacks of koenig in such a way present themselves a durable, waterproof covering, combined with a variable interior employment. The removable stretcher system is installed on the cover side, so that with the placing of the backpack only the waterproof outer hull affects the soil - the stretcher system remains drying and cleanly. The outside fastening spots for stand, camouflage tent, external bags, carrying handle and shoulder belt serve at the same time as placing feet and edge protection. The interior with the masses 460 x 300 x of 170 millimeters is largely enough for camera equipment with objectives up to 4.0/600 mm and can be individually partitioned: On the one hand with the standard interior organization for small picture equipment, which offers, both with set objective and many objectives for example two to housings and accessories place. Price: 380, - euro. And on the other hand with a customized interior organization, to which by post office or over InterNet a full-scale raw sketch and indication guidance are available. So individually the optimal allocation for equipment with telephotos, central format or large size can be sketched. Price: 440, - euro.

I translated a german written report about the koenig backpack. You can find exact infos here (only in german) http://www.members.aol.com/ekoenig/. IMHO the best backpack i 've ever seen.

  5. Shek,

I purchased this lens two years ago at a local LF-dealer in Vienna, Austria for 1100$. I was (...and still be) a newbie in LF photography and the main reason was that i owned at this time only an old Angulon 6,8/65 with a too small picture angle. The second reason was the max. aperture 4. After i shot a lot of rollfilms, i saw that 95° picture angle is not enough for architectural photography, the sharpness is not crispy enough - especially in the edges and the movements of this lens are to small. Vignetting is only at f4 very hogh, but not an issue because nobody takes his pictures with the max. aperture. So i changed to a Super Angulon XL 5,6/58, a lens not to compare with the SA 53/4. So the lens is for sale.

  6. dear alfonse,

yesss! this is a common problem with lf cameras. i had it too until a "really expert photographer" told me the ultimate solution:

he went to the hospital to let operate his brain. the neurologist turned his brain 180° around the horizontal axis, connected the optic nerves again and that's it!

the only disadvantage is that he is not longer able to drive his car, but if you imagine these horrible traffic jams in the citys of the world, he won't really miss it!

  7. hi,

i'm sorry that i can't help you but some month ago i searched about the same infos like you....and could'nt find any help. the reason is because i have the same lens ant want to sell it now. my version is one of the last (and really rare) with the front barrel in black. the earlier models had a chrome front barrel. now my question: what model is yours and how much did you pay? did it include a lensboard and what kind of shutter?

excuse my bad english, but i'm not so familiar with it!

  8. I have also a Schneider Symmar - it's the 180/5.6-315/12 - and the same problem. I use it on my Linhof Technika V 6x9 (last model). When i unscrew the front element there is in no bellows extension a sharp image at the GG. But when i unscrew the rear element, i have a very sharp image at all distances. The bellows extension at infinity is circa 280mm. Could'nt be this a hint, that the lens gets her focal length of 315mm when the rear element is unscrewed?
  9. I have a Linhof Technika V 23b and the APO Symmar 100/5,6 is always inside. This advantage gives me more space in my case i am faster too.

BTW i never needed the "additional working speed" because i never made my shots on a celebrity show or at the Indy Car Series:-))

  10. David,

I don't eexactly know, but i can imagine with my common sense, that the spacing between the lenses of both cells is as important - and sensitive - as the spaces between the lens groups of a single cell. The single lenses, the groups and the spaces also are part of the system.

Well, if you would screw the rear cell on a i.e. Symmar and you tighten it careful...

and the you tighten it with a little more power, you will see that it will be never more than 1°. If the screw thread would have a pitch of P=0,75mm, 1° would bring the cells ~0,0028mm apart! I think this is within the tolerance, because i am sure the screw thread is a finethread with a pitch of more less than P=0,75.

  11. I replaced on my Technika the original GG into a Bosscreen and combined it with a Linhof Fresnel. With this combination i 've got a more than 1 stop brighter image an a more even light distribution. This helps me especially when i use a wideangle lens with f5.6 max. aperture or lower in dim light.

Linhof, Germany mentioned that it is not necessary to use a bosscreen but everybody who worked with both, know the advantage in focusing at fine structured details. In Austria - i live there - we dont have the problem with extemely hot weather, so i dont know the problem with bubbles in the wax. From my appointment i can only recommend this combination to everybody.

  12. Beetween "Mödling" and "Baden near Vienna". This is 15 miles south of Vienna, Austria, where the austrian emperor Kaiser Franz Josef I. spent his weekends. And I am sure that you can imagine that this is a wonderful place to live, when an emperor - nearly 90 years ago - made it to his choice.
  13. ...two sixpacks Bud light against dehydration, a bottle of Jack Daniels against infections, my Buck Survival Knife, a family pack Wrigley peppermint chewing gum, 200 pcs. Marlboro, a Zippo, two dozen condoms against the special seductions and my S&W .357 Magnum Mountain Hunter against those who try to bring me back in real life and my Linhof Super Technika V with the APO Symmar 5,6/100 and 20 rolls of Ektachrome E 200... Uuuuhh, what a dream! :-)
  14. Hi folks, please help me with your advice. I own a Super Angulon XL

5,6/58 with a max. picture angle of 110°. My next longer lens is a

APO-Symmar 5,6/100 with 72°. The preferred format size is 6x9. Now

I'm looking for a (little bit) longer wideangle lens, who fits

perfect between those two others. Would a 65mm lens or a 75mm lens be

the right choice? Which lens would you buy?

  15. The more and more i read about the convertible symmars, the more i'm confused.

I own a conv. symmar 5.6/180-12/310. When i unscrew the the rear element, i have a 310 with the matching aperture scale. But when i unscrew the front element and try to use the rear element only there is no possibility to get any kind of a sharp image - not at infinity and not at max. bellows extension.

So, what is right now? Why is often to read:"...you must only unscrew the front element and..."? Am I the owner of a "special edition"?

    Please help Chris and me!

  16. Jim,

I think to use a LF-camera without a tripod is not a good idea. I have some reasons for that and one of them is:

You never can get a slide or a neg with the same sharpness as if you would have used a tripod. To get a shorter shutter-time you must use a larger aperture = not the best working aperture or you must use films with a higer I.E. = not the ideal behaviour in contrast and/or color for landscape.

And I think the most of us changed from smaller formats to LF because they wished to have the best image-quality. IMHO i think to use a LF-camera without a tripod is to do some steps back on the hard and steep way to the finest images.

  17. My favourite lenses are the Apo Symmar 5.6/100 and the Super Angulon

XL 5.6/58. I used both of them without a Lens shade. Yes, of course i

could use my old Linhof Shade (with the slot for slip-in filters)

further on. My problem is that these Lens shade don't fit the Super

Angulon. Some times ago I have seen a Lens shade from Toyo. This is a

little ballhead with a socket for the acessory shoe and a supporting

arm. At the end of the arm is a cardboard holder mounted. The arm

with the attached black cardboard can de adjusted in nearly every

position to keep stray ligt away from the lens. With this item I have

the problem that it is made for cameras with an acessory shoe on the

lens standart and not for cameras like my Super Technika V with the

acessory shoe on the body. For this position and longer bellows

extensions the support arm is to short and on windy days I'm like

    under canvas!

    What can you recommend?

  18. Thank you, folks for the answers!

Now you have convinced me not to change my compur shutters into the modern copal. It is a lot cheaper to change the lensboards only to fit the lenses on my Super Technika V 6x9.

Thanks again for the help to save my money!
