Extension tubes, more than 1:1, 105mm, it sounds as extremely difficult focus to me. Please include camera rails (really dont know the device english name) too.
Cheers.

Magical question ,dear friend. Really do not why.
But they have two lenses f2:8 that almost cover that range: 17-55 f:2,8 and 70-200 f:2,8 VR.
If we are not talking about specialized lens as micro lens, or so., Why more?

To test (or blame) a lens with justice, please use a tripod and a remote shooter (cable MC 30 or similar). AF in single mode, made too very light corrections on the Focus to asure focus is absolutely perfect. If testing the lens in this way improves a lot over previous results, then it is not the lens fault.

Arun,
Could you post us two pixel-level crops of your VR and non VR images?.
Thanks.

A fast lens helps a lot in weddings. Even if you use flash, you can easier mix ambient light with flash.
The link posted by Josh Root shows an article that is enough clear in this sense. Read it.

What Gerald says is true. It is an overheat and you must wait until refresh.
And I would add, that is why a professional wedding photographer must have dual gear, as airplanes two engines, for safety. I always shoot with a friend, two independient photographic gears. It is not only safer, you can get very different images with two shooters.

I use genuine Nikon batteries mixed with generic batteries in my Nikons D200 and D300 and have no problem (yet). I use grips in both cameras.
But I believe this is a poor contact problem. I clean the battery and camera contact every two months with isopropilic alcohol (only a moisten ear cotton) and everything is working fine.

Pixel-level test for lens is like a lie detector for persons.

I think the 70-200 VR is a little sharper than the 80-200 AF and AF-D versions.

Hector,
If the LCD data layer is damaged or not, I could send inmediatly to service, because you could have another unkonwn damages that can ruin totally the camera later.
Sorry for your incident, no one of us is free of this.

"Extension tubes, teleconverters, and close-up "diopters"."
Exactly, sir.

Lybby,
Could be a poor contact betweeen the flash and the camera. Be sure you lock the flash when is mounted turnig the little key to the right.
And try to clean the flash and camera contacts.
I do know if the flash batteries are in good state, and reset the SB800 to factory settings, check it too.
If the ERR message is still appearing, well, take the camera and flash to service.

Distance is a very relative terminology, I mean, short distance?, medium distance? or long distance?. If you want a sharp lens working in a long distance the 17-55 is not your lens, but in its range it is an excepcional lens, as you can see in the crops above.
Then, it depends again if you are going to use in a FX or DX camera, because results are not the same.
Anyway, my Nikkor 17-55 f:2,8 is a very sharp lens even at the longest focal, 55mm.

I have a 70-200 VR and I am very happy with it. It is a full frame lens, very sharp and very flexible to use. I can use in a F100 or a D200 or D300. I do not believe in rumours, the next future never knows, so enjoy your magnificent lens.
Anyway, I have several professional press photographers friends using this lens with the Nikon D3 and they feel very comfortable with the 70-200 VR,,and this lens is the favourite lens for famous people portraits, mainly in social events.
I you sell or whatever you do with yours lens, believe me, you will miss it.

If i had to rate this three lens: 17-55 Nikon, 17-50 Tamron and 18-70 Nikon, the results would be:
1.- Nikkor 17-55 f:2,8
2.- Tamron 17-50 f:2,8
3.- Nikkor 18-70 f:3,5-4,5
And of course, if I could I would buy a Porsche (Carrera 4S)

Could be you are trespassing the minimun focusing distance? Check it, please.

I have had Nikon D50, D70 and now currently D200 and D300. And I agree Jose Angel, the percentage of closed eyes by preflash in the Nikon D300 is really very low compared to the other cameras.

Ken, no one or your links is working

And just now I am more confused. Reading yesterday the Borjn?s comments and now seeing your images. Ufff, what can I say?.
Thanks, Jose, anyway.

Joe, for what you want, $ 2000, is not enough. Talk to Visa or Mastercard or whoever else to multiply your amount x4 or x5, if you want to get quality and sharp pictures at 274m (300 yards) and beyond.
I have a Celestron Refractor 102 XLT Astronomic Telescope. Is a 1000mm f10 and when you use it as a terrestrial lens, all that Shun Cheung says about air pollution is absolutely true.

I forgot to say that I use a microcomputer controlled charger, and try to not leave batteries full empty.
-
I am using NiMh batteries from a popular DSLR manufacturer with very good results in my two SB 800. The batteries are 2700 mAh units.
-
I think in a poor contact too. If cleaning the contacts do not fix this issue, send your camera to service.
Anyway, try to reset the camera to factory settings, replace or full charge the battery and if still you have problems, then send to service.
Rebel XTi / Nikon noise comparison -- a dealbreaker?

I have shooted hundreds of photos with a Canon 30D from a good friend of mine, but I still prefer my trusty Nikon D200. Nikon flash photography is miles ahead.
A little more info for the post.
