<p>You can do this with almost any light source, or window light for that matter. The key is to make sure that there is no light bouncing back onto your subject from the side opposite the light source. So if you are in a small room with white walls for example, you'll probably need to put black fabric or black foam core on camera left so that side goes dark. Try it.</p>

<p>The banding issue is not just for sRAW. Canon have also acknowledged that Highlight Tone Priority causes banding. (it does not cause banding in the 1Ds3 camera...)<br>

<p>Thanks John. I am in touch with Canon about the focus issues...we'll see if that is a design issue or if it's just my camera. I looked on my hard drives at past shoots and found that the focus was far superior on the original 5D as to focus in dim light! I was getting around 80-85 % in focus using the outer AF points in relative darkness, now I am getting maybe 50% with the mark II. I put a detailed update on the blog so Canon support could see it.<br>

In short, IQ is great, the outer AF points still stink in the dark (as the Mark I did.), but the camera is indeed nice to use. See the writings here:<br>

<p>I think the Canon 85 1.8 is very hard to beat. I own it as well as the 1.2 II and they are both great lenses. The 1.8 is much lighter, smaller, and has faster AF. I would not hesitate to buy it.<br>

I suggest the 35mm or the 50mm. 85 is a litle long for general kid shooting, IMO. The 50 1.8 is great optically, but it

feels like cheap junk. The 1.4 is a great performer, but some of them are soft wide open. The 85 1.8 is great and

sharp, but probably too long for this purpose. I wrote a brief article abot 50mm lenses on my blog the other day:
