    give it a whirl. i've done other highly contrasted prints that have required 2 stops over exposure; depends on the neg. to fill in some dev details - i used ultra black dev 1:9 at about 70f. as soon as you see the blacks take shape, pull the puppy. a post development bleaching of very dilute ferri and potassium bromide will clear any 'crud' in the whites. i typically use a 4% or 5% solution for this at 68f ish.

    overexpose and underdevelop. i did this one 1 stop overexposed on the enlarger w/a #5 and developed for 15 seconds in edwal ultra black.

    -edit- the pinkish tone is from gold toner.

    Owen;

    my thanks again. my attempt was to blur the boundaries between flesh and covering on the extreme right and left of the body (shadow and light, respectively). i'll try a reprint tomorrow.

    i've perused your portfolio; excellent work. demands a good night's sleep and some fresh coffee from me. i'm looking forward to setting aside some time tomorrow to take it all in.

    -edit- i realize that i did achieve this:

    "my attempt was to blur the boundaries between flesh and covering on the extreme right and left of the body (shadow and light, respectively)"

    but clearly it is not effective. reprint is in order.

    it works exceptionally well by itself. there is just the right amount of information, although a nit pick is the view of the sidewalk through the thighs of the woman on the right.

    the people are nicely placed on either end of the frame and they are clearly communicating about something.

    it's simple and rather elegant.

  1. white: check

    gray: check

    black: visible up to 'h'. if i strain hard enough i can pretend to see the 'i', but casually viewing and the absence of self persuasiveness, i can't see it.

    i want my 'i' and 'j'!

    update: i tweaked my gamma and now have my i and j.
