What online printing services offers the widest gamut for their printer-paper
combination.
I color corrected some of my images in PSCS2. When I soft proofed the images
using Adorama's profiles, some of the reds are getting clipped even though the
Red Histogram in PS isn't clipped.
I apologize if my question is not technically correct but what I am
essentially looking for is some online printing lab service that can deliver
prints with high levels of saturation.
Thanks,
Venkat

The specs at Canon website doesn't list it. Does anyone know what the max
magnification is for this lens without accessories? With a Canon 500D, will it
come close to 1:2 magnification?
Thanks,
Venkat

Thanks, Edward.
It is in fact "resin-impregnated fiber bushing" - I just like to call it cardboard ;-) It is stuck and I couldn't remove it just with finger pressure.
Thanks for your input - I will look up on the Bogen website for more details.

I have a Gitzo G1227 that I have used both with the regular center
column and a short center column for the last 3 years. Off late, I
have noticed that the center column has become very loose - it
rotates most of the time thus making a stable composition impossible.
Yesterday, I disassembled it to examine it. Looks like there is a
cardboard padding inside the tripod center tube (into which the
center column fits) - this cardboard is stuck to the tube. There is
no friction between the outer side of the center column and the
inside of the center tube.
How can I remedy this - any suggestions?

Thanks for the diary.

Arnab,
Thanks for the article.
"This image required careful planning and work by a skilled technician in the enlargement methods" - how much will this cost? ;-)

David,
I spoke to a sales rep at a very reputable Nikon dealer in NYC. He offered me the D2X for $4500 but the wait is at least 2-3 months. I wouldn't be surprised if this sells for less than $4000 by Christmas.
-
If it is gathering dust, sell it.

I agree with Ted - Nikon Capture + Element 3.0 is currently the best option.
You could do all your white balance/exposure/tonal/color corrections in Capture followed by cleanup/sharpening/output tasks in Elements 3.0. The best part is you have the advantage of 16 bits all along. For less than USD 200, this is a great solution.

<i>Like it or not it'll be a hard sell if you show up as the "pro" with the same camera the guests have!
</i>
<p>
Just make sure you have a 500mm AFS slung on your shoulder while you go around shooting pictures with the D70 and a mid-range zoom. People won't notice the camera as much ;-)

If price is not a constraint and you do not carry a bag of Nikkors, go with the 20D - it has excellent quality at high ISOs which you might need in weddings.
Get the best glass you can afford.

<i>any other DSLR. </i>
<p>
Correction: any other non full frame DSLR.
<p>
<i>
The only way you can possibly verify this statement would be to shoot in the same sets of circumstances with a matched set of lenses (a 16-35mm f/2.8L, a 70 -200mm f/2.8L, and say a 24mm Tilt/Shift ,shifted ) on a 1Ds, a 1Ds mk. 2, and a Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c since these three cameras all use a Canon EOS mount. Now you have reducedthe variability to strictly the sensor.
</i>
<p>
Ellis, hopefully my previous statement clarifies my earlier statement. Now, where can I get these full frame beauties to test :)
<p>
Eric ~, your observations are correct. A lot of us (including me) would rather blame the equipment than myself for bad photographs. The bottomline is : smaller sensors are more than good enough but if I could afford a full frame DSLR, I would buy one. If the SLR/n was built on a D2* body, I would buy it. Unfortunately, it is not.

"Agree 100%. But there is more to the 1Ds sensor than megapixels. If you put the best L glass in front of it, you can tell the difference between the 1Ds and any other DSLR."
You're going to have to explain that one.
</i>
<p>
Bigger sensor and better resolving power.
-
Curt,
I have the Dell 2005 FPW widescreen LCD. Excellent contrast and sharpness. I couldn't tell the difference between that and an Apple 20" Cinema Display. It cost me $1400 to get a top of the line Dell Dimension 8400 with the display. The Apple LCD itself cost $1299 then (now it is less than $1k).
Dell - value for money.

<i>Let's not even start talking megapixels. No-one can tell the difference between 12MP and 16MP on common print sizes like 11x14" or 13x19". </i>
<p>
Agree 100%. But there is more to the 1Ds sensor than megapixels. If you put the best L glass in front of it, you can tell the difference between the 1Ds and any other DSLR.
<p>
<i>now the skill of the post-processing will overwhelm any difference in resolution anyway, when it comes to final print quality.</i>
<p>
Couldn't agree more. But a person with equivalent post-processing skills can produce a much better final output out of the 1Ds than any other DSLR.
<p>
Mihut, if you had the $$$, I would advise you to go with the 1Ds and some fantastic "L" glass. I know I would. Used Nikon equipment stills well on Ebay. It's better than whining and speculating about what Nikon will or won't do.

<i>AFAIK, the main selling point for the Fuji S3 is its extra dynamic range. That has appeal to people who are used to the wide range of negative film. I am, however, have been a slide film user and the dynamic range for DSLRs doesn't bother me.</i>
<p>
Two other selling points:
<p>
1. Low noise at high ISOs
<p>
2. Excellent JPEGS straight out of the camera that requires minimal post-processing.
<p>
Of course, I am talking about the S2Pro here but I am sure the S3 has improved over the S2.

<i>What autofocus lens would you recommend for just carrying around town, wide to portrait length?</i>
<p>
The kit lens ( 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AFS ED ). These sell for $250 on Ebay. Wonderful all purpose lens - sharp, contrasty, light and fast focusing. It's a tad slow on the long end, though. For $1300, you could get a 17-55 f2.8 DX.
<p>Enjoy your D2H!
<p>
-
Hi Arnab,
I don't know what other criteria you have. If resolution and high-ISO noise are not an issue, the D2H meets all your criteria. It's a improved F5 body. Believe me, once you start using it you'll never again go back to the D70.
20D's viewfinder is better than D70 but the D2H is way better. I have used all three bodies.
I don't anticipate printing anything bigger than 8X10 and for that the D2H rocks. If the D2X were in the $4k range, I would have ordered one by now and sold the D2H - but that's not going to happen for quite some time.

<i>Have no idea about Canon's new flashes being sold this way. </i>
<p>
Vivek, Ebay prices bear no correlation to how either of these companies is performing. Sometimes, I see prices for used items more than that for new from B&H.
<p>
<i>In the meantime, I among others, will eagerly look forward to a comprehensive D2X review from the veteran photog, Ellis.</i>
<p>
I read sarcasm here. I'ld rather read Ellis' review after him having actually used the equipment than most speculations on this board.
-
<i>I'll get one EOS 20D now (and an upgrade 1 year later) and the Canon 180 Macro </i>
<P>
Arnab, I REALLY feel that it is a great plan. But, you could wait for another month or two to see if there is any D100 replacement.
<p>
BTW, one of my Canon friend's sold his 180 macro and got himself a Tamron and is very proud of his decision.
-
<i>The bottom line is that Nikon is goingto sell a lot more D2X units than Canon will sell EOS 1Ds cameras</i>
<p>
Hopefully, some day both Nikon and Canon release sales and profitability numbers by camera models.
<p>
Also, it's unclear whether the D2x competes with 1Ds Mk2 or 1D Mk2.
-
Not sure about $8000, but when mint 1Ds were going for $3700 as soon as the 1Ds Mk2 was announced, I admit that I was tempted to pick up one of those. I think Bob Atkins mentioned recently that if full frame was more affordable, many would be buying it.
I would have loved to watch Canon's reaction to a $4000 D2X. Unless the image quality from D2x is outstanding, Canon need not react at all.

Thanks, everyone.
I think the best way to evaluate is to try out all different options. I will send my prints out to WCI and Mpix (Metallic) to see how those prints turn up.
