Andrew: Ilford DDX 1:4, I'm sure - it's my default, and I only started trying some other soups (e.g. Rodinal) in 2003. Normal Ilford recommended time and agitation (10 secs. per minute).

Just noticed your questions: While I take credit for seeing the picture, the light was what was available (shady side of the street). I give most of the tonality credit to Ilford Pan F developed in Ilford DDX - and the lovely Leitz/Leica 135 Tele-Elmar, a sharp but not overly contrasty lens. The combo of lens/film/developer give negs with tones that go on forever and just seem to almost scan themselves. I also use Ilford's recommended agitation of 10 sec. per minute, which I think also helps keep the tones under control.
It is a grayscale image, scanned direct from film with a Nikon Coolscan LS-1000 (2700 ppi original scan). Saved for this post as a JPEG at highest quality after converting to gamma 2.2, since web browsers seem to prefer that gamma.

Andrew - color neg. (Kodak Supra 100, most likely).
Poor scans - made and posted before I saw God and got my monitor calibrated.
