I think the skillful use of DOF is what makes this picture special. The exposure and the general composition are very good, but in choosing to emphasize the primary subject and thereby attract the the viewers attention, moves this picture from craft to art.
  1. Great capture of the moment. Very good technical handling of the camera. I like the exposure and DOF choices. They yield a tonality and feeling of texture that I find very pleasing. I might try a crop just above the ivy on the right hand side. I think a square composition would concentrate the viewer on the subjects more, but I could be wrong.

I really like this picture on a number of levels. 1.) The intent of the subjects, he goes, so she follows. 2.) The slight tilt of the frame echoes the forward leaning attitude of the subjects and imparts a feeling of toil. 3.) The subtle use of color and the control of depth of field are just right, they add to the composition without intruding upon it. Great Work! I can't wait to see the rest of the series.
  2. What drew me to this picture is the juxtaposition of the stolid art museum and the spacecraft looking gondola, but when I viewed it full size I was impressed by the way the composition rivets the eye on the center of the frame. So much so, that I didn't even notice the handrail until I read the comments. Cropping the handrail and getting rid of the reflection in the top third might be incremental improvements. Overall, a very interesting and engaging picture.

Even though this picture is not framed well (tilted) it still shows an eye for engaging composition and the recognition of interesting subjects. Seeing is the hard part, craft can be learned.

This reminds me of Klaus Kinski rotating into the frame in a Werner Hertzog movie for some reason. Maybe this is why I didn't rate this picture high on originality. My "fair" aesthetic rating is because I think the use of a super high speed film is a mistake here. The grain and blown highlights are distracting. All that being said, I still like this picture. It shows a talent for and a recognition of what is interesting in candid portraiture.
  3. I have a taste for architectural photos that have a monumental feel, which is why I like this one. The sweep of the roadway into the building and the low angle are what makes this composition. I agree with the comment that a little too much foreground is showing. Removing the barrel distortion wouldn't hurt either.
