Triggering a test flash works but so does using it for real. The setting of the slave units takes place just before the flash fires. Doing a test enables you to see the changes have transferred but it's not necessary for other than peace of mind.

The only problem I've found, and it's well-documented on the Apple and Wacom forums, is that Yosemite isn't happy with the older Wacom drivers, and the latest Wacom drivers aren't happy with the oldest tablets. If you use a Wacom tablet do some searching before you upgrade.

It's from "Us and Them". I don't know if it has an specific title.

Fun! Lots of good memories there.

Nice. Thanks for the tip. This beats having to switch to DPP when testing, practicing, or trying to solve a problem.

These, in the appropriate sizes, are very handy for keeping stands, cables of all types, and power cords organized. I've seen them at Home Depot too.

http://www.cableclamp.com

I don't think Ms. H. is talking about legalities, but some sort of moral/ethical obligation to preserve pictures one has taken. I don't know, really. I have two I took of my beloved dying in the ICU, and while I don't feel I can show them to anyone, I can't bring myself to delete them. I'm probably going to pass the puzzle on to my kids when I die.

Leaders underestimate their subject's appetite for slaughter, which is why the censorship. It only took about twenty years for the people who went through WW1 to do it all over again on a much grander scale. The pictures didn't galvanize the opposition in the US to the Vietnam war, it was their friends and family getting drafted and expended for no apparent gain that did.

I'm on team Dieter/Bill. That "just" implies all tools of a class are very much alike, and that's simply not the way they're perceived for many people. For example, there are differences in the way kitchen knives and other utensils feel in one's hands, it's not only with the more complicated items like cameras and automobiles that one can have a good or bad (for want of a better word) meld.

Eric, Aaron isn't talking about a 3 Mb jump in size, he's upset by "the file sizes jump from about 20mb (ARW) to anywhere from 45-85mb (DNG)". Your size increases are about what I'm getting and no big deal.

-

Yes. I just tried it with LR5 and got a .DNG slightly smaller than the .ARW file at about 20Mb.

Thanks, Marc. I loved the Keppler piece, I'm always debating the taking vs leaving gear questions with myself.

Near as I can tell, they both do the same job of controlling and firing slave units. But, as might be obvious, the flash also emits light at the expense of being lots heavier.

I have an FZ 200 in the car with me almost all the time. It's perfect for catching odd vanity plates and the other strangenesses one finds in L.A. by accident without needing so much attention it causes an accident.

Now that I think of it, is steel mandated by law in your area? If not, and you're not working at high temps, I'd go with two nylon webbing utility straps from an outdoor store. Not expensive, easy to handle, lots of weight capability, no intrinsic hazards, and redundancy.

-

I can see three possible advantages to a PVC cover. There's less chance of scratching your gear, less chance of a broken strand of steel cutting into whoever has to handle the cable (I've done this to myself, it's not fun), and less chance of some oddball electrical loop causing problems.

It's not happening to me with Chrome under Mavericks on an iMac but nudes do get covered when I use Firefox.

It's light, compact when folded, and sturdy enough for relatively light gear. However, there's no getting around the More Mass -> Better Stability & Vibration Damping correlation so you'll need to factor in your own shooting circumstances. I like it very much after climbing a few flights of stairs with the rest of the gear.

Also check out stores like REI and Adventure 16 for nylon webbing, buckles, connectors, sliders, carabiners, and other goodies needed to satisfy one's inner Sheldon Cooper. After trying and failing to break the dog collar, I'm satisfied my the $10.00 or so investment at Petco.

Genuine 550 paracord or equivalent and a good knot will work too unless your rig is over 550 lbs or you need to remove the Black Rapid often. The dog collar seemed the best solution given I had the Canon hand strap already attached. Be careful NOT to get any of the cat collars advertised as being "safe", those are designed to open if yanked.

Black Rapid is now selling a safety rig for those worrying about the carabiner or the tripod screw coming loose. Instead of that, I use a black nylon dog collar with a quick release buckle running through the handgrip strap on the 5D3 to the BR strap. Works fine, doesn't look strange, takes perhaps a second longer to deal with if I want to use the tripod socket.
