  1. Thank you everyone for some great advice and suggestions. I am leaning towards buying the lens rather than the camera body. I will probably rent out both the 200-400 and 500 and check out which one I like better.

    Thanks once again.

  2. Hi,

Can the tripod collar for the Nikon 300mm F4 AF-S ED-IF lens be purchased

separately. Mine doesn't tighten anymore. Looks like something is gone wrong

with the threading. Is it possible to buy the collar separately.

    Thanks,

  3. Michael,

I have been primarily doing Nature (landscape, sunrise, sunset, flowers, birds) photography. But I find photographing birds challenging and interesting. I am hoping that I can achieve longer reach by:

    1) Use D2Xs in HSC mode - (300mm + 1.4) X 2 would give me an equivalent focal length of 840mm

    2) Use 200-400mm X 1.4 to get an equivalent focal length of 840mm.

With my current setup I can get only upto 630mm.

  4. Hi,

I have the following setup currently:

    D200

    12-24mm

    18-200mm VR

    300mm f4

    1.4x teleconverter

I would like to have more reach on the telephoto end and I am considering

purchasing a D2xs (for its high speed crop mode) or a 200-400mm VR lens, to use

    with my current setup.

Any suggestions on which one would be a better option and why?

    Thanks,

  5. Looks like the 70-200mm VR didn't like the F5's 8fps!!!

After I tried the lens with the F5 in 'Ch' mode the aperture lever on

the lens started getting stuck intermittently at full open. So

whenever I the stop the lens down to f8/f11/f16 using the camera

there is no guarantee of correct exposure. Many a times the lens

continues to function as if it was at f2.8, thereby resulting in

severe overexposure. This problem also happens on my D70.

Anyone faced a similar problem? Anyone have experience sending their

equipment to Nikon Service Center in Torrance? What is the

approximate turn-around time? Also how is the service? I have read

about people having a bad experiences with the Melville Service

Center. So I am wondering if the Torrance Center is any better?

    Thanks,

  6. It seems to be a very difficult to purchase this lens as it is out of stock almost everywhere. Could it be that Nikon is correcting the issue you have reported and hence not shipping??? I have one backordered for the last 2 weeks now. I recently purchased a D70 and will try using your settings once I receive the lens. Thanks for providing the info.

  7. Taking my family to Eastern Sierra region, this weekend, to see some

fall colors. Planning to do Mammoth Lakes, June Lake Loop and Mono

Lake. On the way back stop @ Galen Rowell gallery and Bristlecone

    pines if possible.

Any suggestions on the best spots for fall colors. Hiking may not be

possible as we have a 5 month old.

Was planning to stay in Bishop but now changed my mind to stay in

    Mammoth? Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

  8. Hi,

I recently purchased a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. The first thing I noticed

is that the lens works only in AF mode. It continues to work in AF

mode even when I switch it to MF mode. I tried it on my EOS 10D and

EOS 3 camera. The results were the same.

Secondly I have been getting Err 99 on the 10D while using this lens.

None of my other lenses (17-40mm, 70-200mm, 50mm) have given this

    problem.

    Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Appreciate any suggestions you can offer to solve the issue.

    Thanks,

  9. Hello friends,

I am planning to visit Grand Canyon and Sedona end of this month. I

will have about 1.5 days in both places.

What would be the best photo opportunities considering the short

    duration?

Also any idea how the weather is likely to be at this time of the

    year?

    Appreciate your responses.

    Thanks,

    Anil
