This is Hunter & Chaak, resident eagles at the Deer Mountain Tribal
Hatchery and Eagle Center in Ketchikan, Alaska. Sadly, these two
regal raptors will not be able to fly again, and will spend the rest
of their lives in captivity. Hunter (male, left) had a wing amputated
after an infection resulting from a shotgun wound. Chaak (female,
right) suffered a broken wing after colliding with a power line.
Unfortunately she was not discovered in time to set the wing properly,
and the bones fused incorrectly, preventing future flight. The pair
have been residents of the eagle center for about seven years and are
now bonded for life.
The captive raptors have a unique opportunity in this sanctuary. They
can still hunt, as they are also in a fish hatchery. Opening a door
to a pond allows fish to swim in, which the raptors can still catch
with amazing dexterity.
The center offers visitors a unique opportunity to get very close to
these amazing bald eagles. It is definately worth a visit if you are
in Ketchikan, and is a short walk from where the cruise ships dock.

I've not had the best of luck trying to capture sunsets in Hawaii. On
this particular evening, the sky as a whole wasn't doing anything
particularly dramatic, so I switched to a long lense, and decided to
focus on the sun and the texture of the few clouds above it. I hope
you enjoy. Thank you for looking!
