Another vote for camera shake especially if it is not constant. If you use Photoshop CC you can compensate for this to some degree. Ultimately the cure is stabilization with a tripod.

-O

Ara,

Your 85mm. prime should probably be sharper but the different should not be as as great as it seems to be. If you cannot cancel the shoots then I might consider renting another copy of the lens. I agree with Wouter that another zoom, even of lesser quality might work for your purposes until you find out what the problem is.

-O

I agree with Patrick S. Give them to her as RAW files and be done with it. If you try to compromise they will drive you nuts, trust me.

-Cheers

Tony.

I have been using the d7100 since it came out and it has spent a good deal of its life with a 17-55/2.8 hanging off of it. This lens is also a tank but despite the size of it I have had no sign that the mount has been damaged. More opinions might be important to be safe.

-O

Amy:

When you don't need a lot of reach, you cannot do better than the 50mm. AFD 1.4. It has a great price tag and is razor sharp. I use it more than any lens in my bag.

-Cheers

Amy:

If I were you I might take a look at the Nikkor 16-85 G VR. I have I have used it for the same situations you are talking about and have been very happy with the results. The VR works very well and will give you at least one stop more functional speed. I have used it with my d7100 which is vert good in low light. I have not shot with d90 so I cannot speak to that. This lens will not break the bank either.

-Cheers

I have had both the d300 and d300s and currently shoot with the d7100. There is no comparison between the 7100 and the other two in terms of image quality, low light performance and autofocus. The 7100 wins those battles handily. There is also no doubt that the 300's are more toughly constructed and have a deeper buffer. As has been said here in the past, in an ideal world there would be a reasonably priced Nikon with the best of both worlds, but this is far from an ideal world unless a few upgrades to the d7100 are in the offing. The d7100 is a superb camera that simply need a turbo charger. I will stay with it for the near future.
