I struggle to connect with any emotion to the subject. There's a shallow DOF but because the shot is straight on I just see a plain wall behind her and for some reason imagine she is holding a reflcetive object of some sort to assist with the light.
I think the PS work would have been better presented in monotone rather than a desaturated look although I have noticed a recent trend for 'white processing'.

If the photo were placed on a coffee table as an untitled print, all viewers would immediately view it the correct way up as gravity does not work in this way. For me presenting this upside down is a flaw and it looks 'wrong'.

For my taste it looks like you've messed with the red channel too much when converting to BW. Which method did you use? Also the eyes look overly dodged. This is evident in the right eye where there would be less light.

The BW processing has also effected the skin texture in my opinion.

Not critisising just trying to be honest and helpful.

Nice light and background. I would have gone for the next shot where she stops drinking and takes breath with eyes wide.

Lovely shot. I would improve by moving camera left to leave less hair and give more open space on the right to where the girl is looking. We immediately look at the eyes and see she is looking out of the frame leaving the viewer with nowhere to go.

  1. Absolutley beautiful portrait and fantastic post processing. My only niggle and it may not prove true unless compared with the above is that due to the contrast/saturation applied it has increased the appearance of vessels in the eyes. Don't get me wrong Im not suggesting you remove them glossy magazine style just that maybe the vessels be masked when applying the contrast enhancing work. Regards to you both.

As a posed shot it really has very limited appeal.

After looking at this shot for a couple of minutes trying desperately to like it all I could see was a dense black nose shadow retracting from the overall image.

Great shot, good composition. Face needs more light from either fill flash or reflected light. Looks like PS has been used to increase dynamic range (if it has very well done but still doesn't alter the need for more light in the face and esp eyes).

Try a lens like the 50mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.8 to increase subject focus.

I'd be very pleased with this none the less.

Oh yeah and make sure you water the grass next time so it is green LOL.

"even given the low angle of the sun, she must be very, very near, given that almost her entire shadow is cast on the train coach (but none appears visible on the platform -- am I myopic, or is that a PS oversight"

She's not that near - the sun is low and casting a shadow diagonal from the model across what appears to be a step down to the platform (or the camera is exactly on the plain of the platform) so hiding the first part of the leg shadow. Correspondingly the left shadow is also the same.

She cannot be 25 feet away as then her shadow would have to be very long to appear on the side of the train which would mean only the top portion of the figure would be seen in shadow. As it is nearly all the shadow is shown indicating a closer distance of perhaps 6 feet...?

The line on the left hand side is clearly a shadow from an upright and not a break in the carriages.

The middle grey section is clearly a mix of windows and carriage and even displays reflections from the windows.

Maybe 2 second exposure is too long a guess but only one person knows...

From another photo in Ciprian's portfolio the lady is definately a placed and dressed model. He is obviously practiced at this type of shot and looking at the uniformity of the trains the neat motion effect could be obtained without the aid of PS. With that amount of shadow and light I woul dnot be surprised if some ND filters were used to drop the shutter speed to a couple of seconds. I don't think the train was moving at great speed otherwise the model would be blown about somewhat. Very nice photo.

Complimentary toning for the eyes and background/foreground really works well IMO. It simplifies the image in the same way as a BW image enabling the viewer to concentrate on the subject.

Fantastic natural pose with strong lines from the arms complete the picture.

Tone looks to be taken from the eye colour and applied to back/foreground and I'm not sure if this makes me think there are areas around the arms where this can be seen.... either way stunning image.

How does the contrast work here - is it too much? What about the

light background areas? Should the faces be the lightest part of the

    photo?

I find the highlight distracting away from the model and her face in this shot and it should either have been eliminated or reworked. If the reflection is removed though the shot requires less of the metal panel. The hole in the panel also takes my attention and should also be removed. All IMO of course.

ooooh, you,ve seen a pigeon and your wife is acting like a pigeon. i think the window taking up one third of space in the photo reallty helps the composition. Regards.

Nice shot apart from the post exposure work where you have blended layers. This is VERY obvious around the tops of the buildings where you have added the increased contrast and darkened sky. I know because you can see it in some of my Prague shots...

Hi, this image is underexposed - if you shot this in RAW file format you can easily correct this. Also there is no sharp point of focus esp for a macro shot. Reshoot this.
