1.
While I am not a pro (yet). I am also looking into building my business in photography. I have research and read some books on the business, some online resources. This may not apply to you, I am just sharing my currently obtained knowledge
While I am a human and I have to eat and pay for rent, I would spend good chunk of the money to fund my fridge while I am building my business. I would say $6K for about 4 months. Cross my finger by 4 months I have some weddings or events booked already. set a side some for marketing (I am NO ONE in the business). some to take a class in business photography, then spend the rest to to fund my gear (which I can see you already have).

  2.
Hi Guys, I asked you before about this battery but no one has ever use it. I guess I am the only one here who want to try it. here is the quick review.

Just received the battery from Malaysia. Its much lighter than the dryfit battery. It comes with its multi voltage charger. I charge it over night. the charger has the indicator if the battery is done charging.

Not sure if it has the power cut off, but its red when its charging and green if its done charging. it did not come with user manual, I guess because its just straight forward operation. But for US market its just not a good business practice to sell anything without user manual. Considering how a jar of peanut butter has to put 'contain peanut' on its label.

The battery is about 1lb lighter than the Metz dryfit battery. I tested it for about 200+ shots with mixed full power and auto mode. for full power, after sometimes, it takes 5-6 seconds to get full charge. I have not try this in the real world but I try to test it with several consecutive shots and it reloads quickly. I use PW to trigger the flash remotely during the test.

Of course I have not try this for a period of time. I am not sure how long will the battery last. so far it keeps going. Its a relieve for my shoulder, yet still give me enough juice for the flash. I will try it in the next wedding, of course I will bring my dryfit for back up :)

If something else come up I will post it again.
3. Hi all,

Does anyone ever use this new type of battery? if yes can you share about this battery type?

This is the first time for me to know that such thing exists. What surprise me is the weight of the battery. it

says only 350gr or less that 1lb. The amperage is bigger that the dryfit, I am not sure if it will shorten the

    life of the bulb.

Oh I found it in ebay. if you google it you should find it too.

Thanks in advance for the input.

    cheers

  4. Hi,

if this is a one time deal, why don't you rent a big hand held flash like Metz CT or Quantum or any other light

source with battery pack like lumidyne. it is small enough and much more powerfull than your EX flash.

If you are doing this for a living as a professional I thing you should get at least 2 of those light source I

mention. if you don't just want bigger flash under $200, I think sunpak 622 should give you extra boost. Its only

$199 for standard version in BH.

Crank up your iso and bounce it to the ceiling, ussualy daycares and school ceiling is not high. I took my sons

birthday in gymboree the other day, just using SB800 with iso 640 using TTL with "Professional" mode on camera. I

put omnibounce on the flash and tilt it 45 degree. The light that comes out just great. Big windows around the

    building also contribute to the

  5. Hi,

I'm also looking for hard case hat fits 3 hensel head. I have been looking at pelican case, but I wonder if it

will fit without sacrificing the safety of the head, cause I am afraid it won't be enough cushion.

Christian, I have the biggest tamrac case to fit all of them with accessories (reflector, grid, some

muslin, softbox, umbrella), but its too bulky, you might want to look at lightware or smaller tamrac case.

I just wonder if anyone has experience with pelican case to transport 3 hensel mono's, especially via air travel.

    thank you

  6. Hi George,

I am not a pro yet, but I understand your feeling. But in US (maybe anywhere) after covering several wedding as a

second photog, I found out that its always late about 30 minutes or more. I thought a pro should have plan B or C

when they go to a wedding. This is why they pay pro photographer, to find/stage/create a good images out of

    nothing if

    they need to.

Maybe with more time/cost from client you can take the picture, the next day.

  7. Just want to comment on below comments.

Especially his word "If you have unlimited chances to complete something you desired, are you willing to take the

    risk and DIY"?

And yes I see it in the big big picture

I guess Mr. Chuck here is not married yet or he is married but does not know what is involved in the common

marriage ceremony. While maybe his word can apply to few couple but for 99% of wedding that sentence is just

plain unapplicable, time can not be rewind, so moments only happened 1 time. B&G does not have enough time to think

about is the picture look nice or not? they have much more thing to worried about. First maybe is my soon to be

spouse is going to show up or not, or is the ring going to be there, is the minister going to be there, is the

flower okay, is my guests feel happy, and thousand more.

I have been to weddings in US several time, and had a chance to cover them as a second shooter. I say the average

of guest in the US is much smaller than the wedding guests in Indonesia. In average the guest of a wedding in

    Indonesia is

about 500 invitation (1000 guests) and 30% of wedding goes to 2000 guests or more (I have been to a wedding with

5000 guests), 20% is less than 500 guests. Now with that many people please tell me honestly that your word still

stand as you say it. if yes, please tell me how?

Because with that many people at that time, you are the least important people in your B&G eyes.

I agree that David question is valid, all question is valid to be asked. its just that his opinion not valid for

    most wedding.

By the way, I am not a pro, so I am saying this as a groom and have the experience to shot wedding in film and

digital as a main or second shooter.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Chuck T said:

I had been in a Wedd' Professional business before, and I understand what David

is trying to say. However, the way

of what he said are offensive and humiliate to professionals, which I also

    understand.

I'm disappointed a lot of professionals were not seeing the big picture. Let's

take a step back, and think about the

composition again. "Yeah, you need a wideangle lens here;)"

A lot of replied from pros are saying similar to one thing: "You get what you

paid for in the end". They have missed

the new digital photography realm and most are thinking the dark ages, that is,

    "film-days" .

Let me ask you a question, especially, to all Wedd' Pros: "If you have

unlimited chances to complete something you

desired, are you willing to take the risk and DIY"?

I bet the answers from all of you are "Yes" or "Of course". Well, enough said,

    my point will stand correct.

All digital cameras have Instant Feedback; therefore, the B and G can ask their

buddy to retake the photos until they

are satisfied. Thus, professional photographers are no longer neccessary

anymore. An "Average Joe" could be

wedding photographer, because he just has to following exactly what the B and G

told him to do so. Maybe the final

result they are getting, in our opinion, are just snapshot but to them, maybe

    priceless and worth thousand words.

In the old film days, most newly wedd were not taking their chances by not

hiring a photographer, because they only

had one chance in their lifetime in that special event. Therefore, they needed

to "trust" the Pros by hiring them than

take advantage on an "Average Joe".

  8. If you shoot mainly in jpeg try eyefi.

They only support sdcard for now, but it can send the image you took directly to your computer (if you set up a

small wifi hotspot in the location) while you are shooting.

You need to know how to set up wireless lan on the location, make sure you secure it so no one will access it.

You only need router + eyefi + computer with wireless card or corded.

Theoritically you can have more than 1 photographer uploading/sending images to 1 computer

  9. Graham,

I have used Bbosasi brand for their Octagon softbox and small softbox. The build quality is the same as dynapos

(I have 2 strip boxes bought from them) since it uses the same material, although the mounting to my hensel head

is okay but I prefer the one made by chimera. THe only reason I try Bbosasi is because their price and they

    include grid for their softboxes.

I just use it for less than a year and so far no complain. Maybe the quality of light is better if I use Chimera

(don't have one), but when I compare to photoflex multidome (broke mine after 1 year, but replace by photoflex) I

have found no different for the light quality. I would say the material for Bbosasi softbox is better (thicker)

    than photoflex.

Using the 140cm diameter octagon softbox (with secondary diffuser in place) I measure -1/2 stop difference from

center to outer corner. I hope thats help.

  10. Hi Roger, I think what David means is "people defending a lack of knowledge/experience with photography by

calling it a style". so this is happend when you are clueless with what you are doing then you are not a pro.

People can learn photography in 1 day, but to make the knowledge really submerge in your brain takes much more

time than that. Jeff works are great, he knows what his doing, if he said he did not then, all he need to know is

    already in his brain.

I am myself not a pro, just interested with all the insight mention above. I know a wedding pro that still use

Nikon F3 + 50mm + 28mm+35mm+105mm, and BW film (no flash). He processed everything himself until the prints out.

And he still doing it right now. in fact he did my wedding :). I love his craft and people seek him for his

craft. not to mention he does not have a website. people still look for his craft.

  11. Hi all,

I just want to let you guys know that I am available to be an assistant or second shooter for wedding and event.

As for quality of my work please be the judge for these images

I am punctual and easy going and have my own transportation.

cheers

  12. I think you should build a good relationship with your church. making the invoice as a donation like Jeffrey said is a good idea. Most couple who will use the church for their wedding will talk to the minister, ask him to recommend you.

That is your door of opportunity. Everyweek you are showing up to take picture, will make all the people in the church think that you are a 'pro-photographer', its a slow brain storming. Hand out your cards, make some print which is a good one and give it to the person attending, business will come.

Word of mouth is the best and cheapest wedding/event photographer way of marketing

Marketing cost money, shooting for the church for free maybe your way to gain more business. Thats how I am looking at it.

  13. I have been using it since 1995. It really take off the weight away from me, imagine, F90x + SB26 + MB + Metz CT1, all that plus 80-200mm f/2.8 or 24-120mm and the humongous metz dryfit battery.

The rubber connector helps to minimize the brassing of my FM2 and F3HP (nylon strap does very bad thing to yout camera body paint after extensive use, happen to all metal body).

  14. I am not sure if Branch brook park in Newark is too far for you, maybe about 30 minutes if you take GSP north, maybe less, only about 12 miles. It has everything you need, especially if you take the place across the cathedral. the park itself stretches to the north, so you might want to go there and pick your location.
