  1. One of the first original takes on the "I'm shooting a self-portrait of me in the mirror showing me shooting a picture of myself." Except here, the mirror isn't interacting with the action but rather just observing. I really like the aesthetic here.

I'm a huge lover of negative space (I'm a graphic designer) and so I really love the balance here. Of course, for those who don't like negative space, you've given them plenty of ammo. :)

Did you brush out the sky & trees?

I really like this composition - good catch with your eye.

Technically, I think that you could really take its visual impact up a few notches by using your image editor to make it "pop." It's a bit flat and muddy.

And this is very subjective but I'm intrigued by the idea of slightly cropping on the left and the bottom so that only the reflection is visible and not the tire and foot peg. It might be cleaner along with making it a bit mysterious.

A very strong photo. I'm always attracted by geometrical subjects.

  2. This is one of those ones that I'm torn about. Parts I hate but I love all of the playing that goes on in the shadows. It takes me a while to fully appreciate it. Chess is supposed to be mellow but this comes off chaotic to me.

Thanks Scott. You know... I used to stress high contrast with a purpose but now, a few years later, I look at these and feel as if technique fell through the cracks. I'm going into the darkroom next week and I'm going to reprint this along with new stuff. I'm going to try this on a warm paper. The neg is pretty hot but I then I printed it on Oriental Seagull #3 and that took the contrast to a new level. I'm learning.
  3. I saw a shiny new version of this bike, loaded with flowers, in the Mission yesterday. I like yours MUCH better - it has character and story. I like the "pastel-y" feeling on the wall and shutters. And the rough road and that seat really make you feel the harshness of riding that bicycle.

Birgit hit the nail on the head. I was looking at your portraits and, wanting to give you my overall impression, figured that I'd just write it in the comments of the first in your portfolio - this one. Just what Birgit said... your people are very natural. They obviously feel very comfortable around you and your camera (to the extent that they could all be good friends of yours).

Cropping the dog out will enable your image to fully carry a serious and formal tone and give it more of a fashion slant. And the stairs fill the frame excellently. It would be a very good-looking photograph!

But you've got the dog and I like the dog. Her/his presence adds a whole 'nutha element and, for me, your photograph gains so much more personality. Without the dog, your photo is very good-looking/formal/traditional. With the dog, your photo looks like a random event but this one comes off as a very nice composition. And both the woman & dog are rubbernecking off in the same direction. Without the dog, it would seem like many shots where the model is simply gazing off into the distance. Add the dog and all of sudden I'm wondering what in the world is going on that's able to capture the attention of both the woman and the dog? It must be good. I wanna see...

And it's not a super cutsey dog. The one that you have here provides a good "foil" for the more formal model. (though I'm very biased towards golden retrievers :)

But if a more overall formal shot is your intent then dump the dog like Monika suggested.

Are those the stairs to MMOA?

I love this! I immediately thought that it was a "Bauhaus" graphic illustration. Very excellent composition. I like "8th ST" muted like that. That moon up top is really a kicker! If you plan on making posters, let me know. And an ME Super - I love that camera! IMHO, one of Pentax's better ones.

Yeah. It's over. This shot was very therapeutic for me. I had planned on placing this 1950s two tone beat-up suitcase at her feet but had forgotten it. I would have loved that prop in the shot but I didn't realize until we had arrived and we driven 1 1/2 hours to get to this location. I'm bummed but not too upset 'cause I think that the viewer already gets a strong enough sense of "departure." I didn't forget the fuzzy dice and that was the more important prop for me.
