1.
I have a friend who has a restored Deardorf 8x10 and a couple comprible high-value lenses that he is looking to unload. eBay seams pretty tough and spotty for the specific lenses and camera. Craigslist is scary.

Is there anyplace that one can go to offer large format gear like this for sale and get a fair price?

  2. What is non-photographic experience worth to a client?

So, I followed a buddy of mine around some last summer to shoot him competing a

few triathlons. There were some pros there shooting so they could sell images

to the triathletes, getting them in "action." They typically sign contracts so

that they get access to the entrant's list.

Anyway, I saw where these guys would set up and it was, without exception, the

worst locations possible. I know this because a bunch of years ago, I did a

few triathlons. Because of this experience, I went to significantly different

    locations to get my shots.

And, I have gotten really good feedback from people who do Triathlons.

I would imagine that this type of experience is valid in other areas. I.e. I

am more likely to get really compelling baseball photos if I had played the

    game.

So, what is this experience worth to a client?

  3. Nikon D80, Pentax K10D (and Samsung?) all use the same sensor from Sony. The RAWs look identical. The difference comes from the in camera processing. when generating jpgs. It is a balancing act between noise and resolution.

Sony seams to have chosen to do a minimum of noise reduction to gain resolution.

So, was there any comment about the Pentax jpgs being significantly softer than Sonys and Nikons? Did they mention anything about Sony having the highest resolution of the cameras tested?

Frankly, I have never had much respect for Pop Photo. It has been my experience that they would slam one product for a fault, thenm give another a pass for the same fault.

  4. Thanks for the feedback.

For clarity, the width is about 10 feet. The depth of the room is about 20-25 feet. I have room to back up.

I have been thinking of getting 2 or 3 Sunpak 120j with a wein hpoto tricgger, some umbrellas or soft boxes (don't know which), stands (don't know how high) and using the built in flash set to manual 1/32 power on my dSLR as the trigger.

    Thanks

  5. You will be able to find them below suggested retail in a few months. These are new to the market, and like most new products, command full retail until the pipeline is good, full and steady. The street price for the A100 is now below $800.

If you want it now, you will need to pay for it.

  6. Robert,

Yours is the first report I have heard in the last week where the Sony rep was not spilling their guts. Sounds to me like Sony people are starting to let plans for near-future offerings slip.

A summary of what I am hearing: 2 new dSLRs next year, FF in the works, don?t know if it is one of the 2 new dSLRs (2 separate sources), 7-10 new lenses (I assume new-to-Sony), mostly mid-market, 24-70mm f2.8 Zeiss, and some of the old KM primes.

These are only rumors at this point, but I am hearing a broad pattern of Sony people dodging fewer questions about future offerings.

  7. They said that they are not going to FOCUS on the pro market. That is different from saying that they are not going to make a pro-level camera.

GM does not focus on the Vette, but that is not to say they don?t do it well.

Making a pro-level camera has more of an inpact on the business that its direct contribution

to the bottom line. It is also a significant marketing tool.

The 7D is an advanced-amateur camera, as are the Pentax K10D, the D200, and the 30D. You will know a pro camera when you hold it in your hands, when you do not see it in Best Buy, when you drop a years worth of car payments to own one, and when it survives you running it over with said car.

  8. Robert,

I keep reading your expectations for Sonys rollout, all the way back to your assertion that Sony needed to show a sample of an upcoming dSLR during PMA before the sale of KMs photo division was completed. And I am struggling to reconcile the basises for your expectations with business processes.

So I ask, in your mind, when it comes to inventory, intellectual property (i.e. designs), and supplier relations, how does a transfer like this go down?

  9. If by "nothing new" you mean nothing previously announced, you are correct. It was posted here before, Sony's Photokina was going to be all about selling the A100.

Interesting how two people can look at the same thing and one can see nothing while the other sees something. Because I did see 3 new Zeiss lenses. From what I hear, these were the first samples shown to the public. (these lenses are not released yet). I also saw pictures of the 70-200SSM and the 300mm SSM being used,

Sony is doing exactly what they said they were going to do. I am sorry that their failure to do more than that has consistently disappointed you.

  10. Chris, the only thing I could say to that is that Sony needed to know whcih lenses they were going to sell before. I am surecost was a major factor in that decision. Who knows what KM shared and when as cost info is typically highly proprietary.

To date, nothing Sony has done shocks me or causes me any concern.

  11. I am frequently dealing with new peoduct components that require 16+ week leadtimes, no matter how much money you throw at the supplier. I am also sure that KM management ran inventories down as low as posible before handing over the keys.

I am sure it is taking sony some time to wet the line.

  12. As far as what is and is not on topic, I feel that a much broader definition is better. Whether it be about maxxum AF cameras, SR's, or even the Pentax K10D (the conversation will come back to how it compares to the A100 and what it means to Sony quickly)

There is a general discussion board on this forum, and even a Digital Camera board, so which is more appropriate? I don?t know anybody on those boards. I am not sure about others, but I am on a short list of forums like this because I do not have the time to be on a long list of forums like this. But here, like Andrew said, you get to know who is who.

Disagreements are great. It challenges people to consider other ideas. But it takes both people who are disagreeing to realize that they don?t know everything, and that the other person's perspective is completely relevant and legitimate to that person.

The thing that is really, really damaging is personal attacks. I have been fairly dismayed by some of the attacks made by some people how profess themselves as adults. I am sure others feel the same way. I would ask them, but most of them have left.
