  1. I’ve heard that the ZF has subject detection in manual focus mode, as well as a digital “rangefinder” function (where the focus box turns green when focus is achieved) that works with older Nikon manual focus lenses.

My Z9 does not do this. Is this correct?

The focus box turning green feature seems to only work with cpu lenses, like my AF-D or Voigtlander lenses. With AI-S, AI, or AI converted S lenses it does not work. This seems odd to me since the focus confirmation works with all lenses on my D850.

Do I have a setting wrong or does the Z9 really lack this ability?

I don't have the 35-135 but have memories of the AF 28-105 D and mine was quite soft at 105mm. You could notice the softness in small prints without enlargement+cropping. I am not terribly surprised to see the result you have.

Which camera are you using, and how did you focus? Focusing accuracy can be a significant contributing factor. If you can try live view to focus on the moon, it would probably give the best results.

Camera was a Z9 and focusing was done manually at 100% magnification

  3. I took these to compare performance at infinity. I wasn’t expecting the 35-135mm AF F/3.5-4.5 to be as sharp as the others but this seems especially disappointing…..

Does anyone have experience with this lens? Is it really that bad or is mine defective?

These are 600x600px crops, not normalized for image scale. All shots at F/5.6 from a tripod. All shot within a minute of each other.
