1.
Last time I flew with film in my carry-on camera bag. The scanners for carry-on are supposed to be less powerful than for the ones being used on regular baggage.
I had no problem with either the B&W film (TriX) or the color negative film I used at that time.
No fogging at all that I could see.
I hope you enjoy Ireland.
You'll see more shades of green than you thought existed.
Great scenery, great photo-ops; and great people.
The food & brew aren't too shabby either! :D
Cheers!

 2.
Looks to me as if they got wet, a.k.a received heavy moisture damage.
Especially around the umbrella's post there is what appears to me to be bleeding of dye from the dark outer material into and onto the interior material. The dark stains on the outer portions are hopefully the same, and not mold stains.
By the way, could it be possible someone used your photo umbrellas as regular umbrellas?
I'd try a solution of OxyClean, or diluted white vinegar, or diluted bleach to try to remove them. The latter applied very carefully of course by dabbing with a moisten cloth
Other than their visual appearance they should still work.

Cheers!

 3.
Jack,
Corel Painter used to be a great Mac app ... unfortunately Corel now pays way more attention to the Windows bunch.
1. Have you tried re-booting with the Shift key down to keep any Log-in items, etc. from launching, and seeing if Painter launches without the "Make Changes"? You might have added a piece of software that you've forgotten about (I do it all the time) which may be affecting Painter's launching.
2. You might also try re-booting and holding down the Option key, selecting the Emergency disc (?), then repair your hard drive with Disk Utility, and possibly even re-installing OSX10.7.2.
3. I gather that you've contacted Corel for help?
4. Those and possibly (re)-installing OSX10.6.8 are your only options that I know of.
5. BTW, if you really need to use Corel 12, there are software available to re-partition your hard drive. You can then install OSX 10.6.8 in one partition if you choose and use Corel from there.
FWIW, OSX 10.7.2 has a good number of quirks in and of itself and with other software. I'm hoping that 10.7.3 will provide the necessary fixes. Right now I holding onto software that states that it's definitely Lion compatible.
Cheers & Good Luck.

 4.
Ed,
As another home owner in NJ, I understand fully the need to make such sad choices. Soon only the super-rich will live in houses. :(
Hopefully someday soon you can set up, at least a MASH unit, and get back to having some real old-fashioned fun & enjoyment again.

FWIW, my darkroom equipment has been packed away in my basement for over 10 years, and while I still get the pang for the fragrances of stop-bath & fixer and for dripping wet prints, I've been developing my B&W film in the kitchen and scanning in the resulting negatives to be worked on with Photoshop.
All The Best!

 5.
This is why photographers are always getting into trouble with the law!
Shooting instead of photographing.
For the love of peace, please put away your .38 S&W and use your camera.
Sorry about that, I just had to get it off of my chest.
BTW, anyone see my meds?
Cheers!

00Z8bZ-386201584.jpg.20d1863c861eff71b83d928149038372.jpg

 6.
I've just acquired a 27" 3.4 GHz iMac i7 and this puppy is FAST! I was very leery of the glossy monitor, but it doesn't present any problems at all and is sharp as a tack.
And it handles Photoshop 5.5 and large files with ease. :)
So far it's the best Mac I've ever had the pleasure to own.
Just make sure you can get it installed with Mac OSX 10.6.8 or else get an installation disc with that version software because there are problems with OSX 7.0. It will not run any PPC software, including plug-ins.
Cheers!

 7.
"shot" -instead of photographed;
"shoot" -as in 'photo shoot' (a big tip of the hat to the advertising, marketing, and especially the fashion folks.)
"shooter" -instead of photographer, or in some cases - camera;

No wonder law enforcement personnel are wary of photographers! Especially your local neighborhood "rent-a-cop"
who has at even best an elementary school education, and definitely has absolutely no idea what the local or state laws are.

Cheers!

 8.
Just in case one wanted to know ...
