    Owl

          2

People who photograph birds for a living must have the patience of a

saint. They are a most unco-operative animal, I waited an age to get

this owl both in the sunlight and against the dark background.

  1. I was setting up for a wide angle, long exposure, movement shot. I

wanted the train moving away, when I saw this man looking at me out

    of the carriage.

The shutter speed was already set to blur movement - so I just

pressed the shutter hoping that the tube doors wouldn't shut.

Sorry Barry, I can't offer any wise words here. Only that Siubhan is my wife and right here she was giving me a look that said she was pi$$ed with me about something but couldn't be bothered to berate me.
  2. Maybe it's my own hang-up; but I hate to see the photographer's shadow.

The tone of the sky is lovely; but the top of the sign crossing the horizon does the composition no favours. I suggest that you should have got lower to eliminate the shadow and move the sign further into the sky.

Credit for the composition has to go to my sister - this is her son

(my nephew) Alfie and she came to our house with this shot already in

    her mind.

The legs belong to my wife, Siubhan.

    Glen Coul

This is the road from Assynt towards Kylesku looking down Glen Coul.

I shot this on Velvia using a standard lens for a 6x4.5 format and

bracketed half stops. It's polarized and a grad grey filter helped

    with the contrast.

I've always loved Colin Prior's photography of this area and this

1500 mile round trip was inspired by his book of "Scotland - The Wild

Places" - even though we try to make the trip at least once a year.

Great composition, great exposure - I particularly like the way you've got the Benetton sign.

the only thing that troubles me is the very central element of light.

    However, I wish I'd taken it :-)

Personally, it does nothing but confuse my eye - I find too many distracting elements: the pole through the guy's head on the right, the reflection in the window near the girl, the flag through the table.

Also the top of the shot is cluttered with canopy, pole, other building.

Finally, the contrast level is rather flat, and while, not a great fan of Ansel Adams' zone system, it could have added something here.

To be constructive, it's a great scene and a step to the right to separate the flag & table, the 2 characters most to the left and wait for the girl to exit then you could have had a cleaner shot.

Hope this is taken as constructive - best wishes,
