  1. But why should Canon upgrade the 5D. They are a business, and there is no competition to the 5D and for the price it is not majorly lacking any feature. There are the common canon gripes, like having a direct print button on mid-high range cameras and not having a mirror lock-up button. But, other than that, it has excellent noise, image quality, the buffer and speed could be better. But, it still leads in most of its feature sets, why would they upgrade? If I were Canon, I would milk the 5D. No other major manufacturer has a 35mm full frame, it is one of the highest resolution 35mm DSLR's on the planet, it has one of the lowest noise sensor's on the planet (For a 35mm DSLR).

Why fix it if it ain't broke?

I just don't think it is a good business decision. But, I'm curious why other people think Canon should or shouldn't upgrade the 5D?

    Full Disclosure: I own a 5D

  2. I have a 5D and 80-200 and they are an excellent pair. When I go to the zoo, I would prefer a lens that focused a little faster. That said, it is still pretty fast. The purple fringe sometimes bothers my outdoor shots, but it is excellent for people. Really sharp.
  3. The last poster is correct.

You would want to use ISO 50 with a lot of light and you want to have a wide open aperture for shallow depth of field to seperate your subject from the background.

I have had to take an outdoor portrait and the light was so bright that even with the highest shutter speed a wide open aperture I was getting saturation. If I could dial up the ISO (I didn't have ISO 50 at the time), I could have kept the wide open aperture.

  4. The brokers are probably working off of commission and were indeed trying to get you. They know their stuff. I recently bought a 5D from Keh. I specifically asked if it was refurbished. The guy assured me it was not, it was just a demo model that was barely used. Well, it turns out it was indeed refurbished. I am not returning it because it was still a good deal and he is right, though it was used, you can't tell. It is in great condition. I almost sent it back out of principle, but didn't want to be without my 5D.
  5. What M Barbou is saying is that if you look at a section of the 5D sensor with an area of the 30D, you will find less pixels(Or photosites) than you find in the 30D sensor. This means, that if you crop your 5D photo to the same size (FOV, Not resolution) as what a 30D would crop to, you would have an image with less resolution than the 30D image. Basically if you cut the 5D sensor to the same surface area as the 30D sensor, it would return a 5MP (12.8MP / square(1.6)) image because of the lower density of pixels. But, before you start feeling bad about having a lower density of pixels, just remember that that is why the 5D has such spectacularly low noise.
  6. PTAssembler (http://www.tawbaware.com/ptasmblr.htm) is a good front end to a great free and open source panorama stitching tool. It takes a little effort to use, but I have found that it produces the highest quality results. Just read the online manuals/tutorials (there are a lot).

On this guys website he gives suggestions on techniques for taking the pictures, thoughts and considerations when taking pictures for a panorama and some good tripod hardware to improve the images.

    I highly recommend this software.

  7. This is good. I hope those of you who have posted negative responses are wrong, but you all have good points. Just to clarify my motives, I was interested in this out of shear curiosity. I have a 10D already and several film SLR's. It's kind of like the guy who made a camera out of a flatbed scanner, not really very practical, but kind of neat.

If I do indeed make it past opening up the P&S, I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for all of your feedback, even the negatives.

  8. Has anybody heard of anyone or tried modifying a film SLR into a

digital SLR. I have an old P&S 3MP digital and an old EOS SLR. I was

thinking or trying to fashion my own digital back from the digital P&S.

I could wire the shutter of the P&S with a sync cord to the camera.

Any thoughts, websites, experience, know how? If it works, I could

upgrade the SLR with better sensors.

  9. The menu at the top of the web page is aligned with the right side of browser, but the body

of the page is centered in the browser, if the browser is maximized on a large screen

(1280x1024), it looks really bad with the community tab over the Photo of the Week and the

search link over at the right side of the page. And, the menu bar to the right of center is

    naked.

I'm not the only one experiencing this, am I? It has been going on for at least a month now, I

figure someone would have spoken up by now. But, it is still there.

    thanks,

    -Ethan

  10. <A href="http://huntsphotoandvideo.com/">Hunt's</a> is a pretty cool camera shop. It is really large. I haven't been there in a while and I have only been to the main store in Melrose which is kind of out of the way(About 20 or 30 min. outside of Boston). They do have a store in Cambridge(Right across the river) which might be worth checking out. If you take the T(public transportation which is very good in Boston) then the area at the Downtown Crossing stop(about 5-10 min. walk from the state capitol bldg) has a bunch of little camera shops. There are one or two cool ones, but most of them are just over priced. <BR>

Try Bromfield Camera Co(10 Bromfield St) they were really easy to haggle with after telling them that I found a similar lense in the camera store a couple storefronts down and I wasn't sure which one I would get.

    <BR>

BTW are you planning to buy or just browse, do you have something in mind.

  11. I bought a 5 on ebay and the seller sent the wrong one(he had several) was broken, so the seller was nice enough to refund my money. So, I then bought a 1n. The 5 was plasticy and did not feel solid. I bought a 1n with my refund and I have been very pleased. The 1n is much more than I need(If you really wanted the 5, then I would recommend the elan 7 or 7n instead). But, I feel very confident in the 1n and would not hesitate getting a heavily used one, it is solid(and heavy) as a rock. The AF works very well, though not as well as the eos 3. If you have a couple extra bucks, an eos 3 in good condition is cheaper than some 1n's in great condition. Unless you need an internal A-TTL flash, I would opt for the 1n or newer elan. I think I am rambling, but those are my 2 or 3 cents.
  12. I will be going to Montreal next June and was wondering the best

places to hike in Quebec within a reasonable distance from Montreal. I

will of course be looking for some beautiful nature pics. An area with

lots of animals would be great. Also, recommendations of locations

that haven't become overrun with tourists would be a plus.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Ethan

  13. That is a good question, I would be interested in an official photo.net

response to this as well. <BR>

I recently had discussions with a few photography store folks. One guy at a

major photo store told me that he couldn't move any of the used inventory and

suggested that film may be scarce in the near future. But I attribute his slow

sales to the likes of keh and ebay.<BR>

I spoke with the owner one of the professional photo labs near me and told

me he was overwhelmed. It was noon and he had already received 300 rolls

that day. He was telling me that his business has picked up in the last couple

years. He thinks film is here to stay, or it isn't going anywhere soon.

  14. Keep in mind, that if you scan a negative you are making a copy of the original image. But, if you scan a print, you are making a copy of a copy, so inherently, you must lose something. Unless, of course, the print scanner is of much higher quality than the negative scanner. You may also feel that post processing in the darkroom can't be reflected or duplicated from an original scan of the negative, and only by a scan of the print.

    My 2cents.

  15. I bought a camera from keh in "bargain" condition because I was strapped for cash. If I had to rate the camera I would have given it a "very good" or "excellent minus".<BR><BR>

Nedless to say, I was very pleased with keh camera.<BR><BR>

Their sales people are very knowledgeable as well.

  16. Thanks, those are both great answers.

Ryan, good point, I guess I left it general, because I don't have one specific area of nature that I prefer. I was thinking of landscapes and animals. My glass isn't too large, so birds would be hard. I might have enough glass to catch some land animals, but, that too would be tough. Some macro photography would be nice too, like butterflies and flowers.

Also, I am not just interested in it for photography, but I also intended to use the answers to find some good spots for hiking, but I didn't want to explicitly mention that because this probably isn't the right place for that.
