  1. hehe...i honestly didn't notice that lock....it's a small cable lock that locks my leather

brooks saddle (which i think are the best saddles) to the bike frame....the lock I use to

actually secure my bike is a 10 lb (not kidding here...) kryptonite chain lock that could

double as a boat anchor :)

  2. conrad thanks for the tips....these pics were meant to just show some friends my new zany

idea and won't be used in an ad in of themselves....

i do plan and taking a portrait with the new setup and putting it on my webpage though

the bike is pretty stable. the extension is made by xtracycle and can carry up to 200lbs. i

usually carry my camera stuff on one side and lightstands on the other...works great!

  3. hey all....just wanted to share some pics of a little marketing experiment i'm trying out....i'm a

photographer in long beach, ca and i'm car free....i haul my equipment via bike and ride

    everywhere...<br><br>

i've decided to advertise while doing my daily errands and had some signs printed...<br><br>

hopefully the response will be good<br><br>

  4. hey all....my local camera store just got a delivery of d200s....i was impressed by the

overall feel of the camera but not exactly blown away by the finder....i brought my d100

with me to compare and although it seemed a bit brighter, it wasn't exactly looking

    through an F2....

    so...my question is....having never looked through a d1 or d2 camera...are the finders for

the d1x or d2x/hs noticeably better? how's it look compared to the finder of a F2 or

    F100?

i'm looking for a dslr that i can use to focus manual lenses with some relative ease...

    thanks

  5. well...i've been doing it for the last few months more or less every other night....for my

current show I decided to do 16x20s, the largest i think i can print in my 5x6 darkroom....

i use an ikea shelving unit i bought and stack the trays vertically..slowly moving the print

down from dev, stop, fix, etc.,...

i'd like to print 20x24 esp for the xpan shots, as they don't seem to come to their own

unless you print them to 16x20, but right now i don't have any room...

  6. photo #2 is one of my faves as well...i wanted the boy to pop so i dodged him out a bit....i

was sort of on the wall about how obvious i wanted the dodging to be...then i decided to

go with a print that was a little more obvious, because i wanted the image to feel surreal

that image was shot off the pier...one thing i'm finding with the xpan is that since it is so

wide, it's difficult sometimes to get a clear background....the beach makes a great canvas

    though...

  7. thanks for the enthusiasm for my show...i'm excited too...nice to see hard work come to

fruition....i'm building an online gallery for those of you who can't attend in person...just

couldn't help but share the xpan stuff right now though :) <br><br>

  8. i'm building an online gallery as we speak...i actually hadn't thought of it but there seemed

to be enough interest...hmmm...i may send the link to curators as a sort of sneak peek in

    lieu of sending boxed prints....

i'm scanning the images today and I should have it up and ready by tommorrow...

c.chen...yes, doing shows is sort of thankless work unless you're established i

guess...most of the footwork and expense is on the artist....i'm still waiting for the day

when i don't have to hang my own phots and the wine and cheese are paid for :)

yeah...unfortunately i'm about to lose my day job...so things will get quite interesting in

    my life, financially speaking...

  9. thanks everyone for the kind words...i'll set up a virtual gallery for those who can't

    attend....

portfolio hosts different shows..not just photography...

    rene-

well...the trick is to keep your costs low...trying to find wholesale prices on mat and

frames...i was lucky in that i was able to get 20x24 frames from a friend of a friend who

wholesales frames for $12 a piece....

i also have a Logan 750 which is big and sturdy enough to size 30x40 mat boards (the

size they come when u buy a box), so that cut down tremendously on mating costs...

there is a saying...art is cheap, framing is expensive...how true that is

printing the photo seems to be just the beginning of the whole fine art process...a lot goes

    into the presentation...

you also have to do a lot of footwork to get people to come and increase potential

buyers....i have been bicycling all around town leaving postcards with businesses,

galleries, coffeeshops in Long Beach to make sure the opening reception is packed and to

    create a buzz...

i just ordered another 1000 postcards that should come today and I'll do the same all this

    week until the reception....

i'm also preparing 2 portfolio boxes to show to curators and collectors...one i will send out

and the other i'll keep to show personally....all my photos are mat with window hinges and

photo corners and all my pictures are printed the same size, so everything is modular....i

can repurpose a portfolio to the tastes of a particular client

buy quality materials that you can reuse...esp. the mat. Alpharag is great stuff....you can

clean small smudges off of it with a white eraser lift dimples or dings with a swab and

some water, scrape off deeper marks with a razor, etc., because the mat is solid cotton rag

    and can take some abuse....

for this show to break even, I will have to sell 2 pieces ($500/per)...the second the show is

done, I'm moving the images to a high end furnishing store that wants me to do a show

there...after that i'm planning to repurpose the framing to do a show in a gallery, etc.,

i'm just starting to really exhibit...i've done one solo show in the past and lots of group

shows...i'm getting laid off from my job and have decided to take the time to really go at

photography, so a lot is riding on the success of this show and the following ones (like

    food in my mouth :).

ok..sorry to be so long winded....

  10. ok...shameless plug...if you live in Long Beach or in the surrounding Los Angeles

environs..I'm having a show of some street photography....everything is

handprinted....16x20s matted to 20x24 and they look quite beautiful if i do say so myself

    :)

here is the invite....hope to see some fellow members there<br><br>

  11. i use it for paid jobs whenever i can....i just finished shooting an annual report for a

nonprofit that creates affordable housing for low-middle income families...i shot it with

    my M's and a nikon f100....

almost all the fine art images i sell through different stores are shot with my M's

right now i'm working on a photo essay for the local paper on krumping and have been

shooting it with an M, f100 and xpan....

photography isn't my main line of work yet, but i plan to transition full time in a year or

    year and a half...

  12. i tend to do both, depending on the situation....

when i'm in a zen state of mood i may take 1 or 2 snaps...but other times i really like to

"work an image"...trying different angles...changing composition...looking for the best

light..and when i'm doing this, i'll shoot a roll on one subject...

i don't think the latter is bad, as long as it's not random shooting, but a controlled and

thought out process....i think photography is like additive sculpture in some ways...you try

different approaches to see what sticks, until you get something you like...however taking

all the inbetween shots is very important as it clears and refines your vision...

don't know if you ever saw War Photographer, but jim goes through a lot of film and i

doubt that anyone can say he's just randomly shooting...he's composing...or as he called it

in an interview, "accelerated seeing", the act of looking at the world compositionally in a

fraction of a second and trying to capture it..

  13. i think some people are being overly harsh here....it's great that an agency would even

attempt to go forward with analog work in this day and age...

granted, some of the jpgs aren't that great quality, but i have no doubt they're beautifully

printed in the flesh and blood

also, there may be too much pumping up with the leica bit, but it is no less obnoxious

than other photographers that advertise they use the latest in digital technology, medium

format digi backs, 5 G5 cluster, with a 2000mm zoom lens....

i do admire their sentiment that their approach is one that encourages intimacy and

    interaction with their subjects...

some of the people in m35 have occasionally posted to PN and I have had transactions

with one of them and he was a gentleman and gave me some advice on getting my own

work put together in a book
