  1. I use an EOS33 and an OmniBounce on my 420EX. I notice that

sometimes the flash icon in the viewfinder will be blinking when

using the FEL (*) lock. From the EOS manual, a blinking flash icon

indicates that the preflash is too weak, and the solution is to move

closer to the subject; however, last time I tried, the flash icon

would only stop blinking when I was within 1 meter away from the

subject (I was using it as fill-flash ourdoor). When I take the

OmniBounce off, the flash icon did not blink even I was 2-3 meters

away from the subject. So I believe the OmniBounce has reduced the

flash power too much that the preflash does not work. So is there

any solutions? Is it ok to take pictures even when the flash icon is

blinking (I believe that the subject may be underexposed)? Thanks in

    advance.

  2. Kelvin: I don't know about the Tokina (I guess it's even newer than the Tamron one?), but I am more fond of the Tamron as it is a hot sale in Asia including Japan.

I have found a web site which compares Nikon AF-S28-70/2.8ED, Canon28-70/2.8L, Sigma28-70/2.8EX, and Tamron SP28-75/2.8.

Well, it's in chinese but trust me you don't need to read the contents to judge the performance of these lenses.

  3. Thank you for all your responses. I have no final decision yet but your opinions are very valuable to me.

For your reference, I have searched the web for a direct comparision among all these lenses. And finally I found the MTF test results of Popular Photography, which has tested all Canon 28-105/3.5-4.5 (1993/11), Canon 50/1.4 (1999/2), and the new Tamron (2003/9).

The result is astonising - at 50mm, Tamron lens is on par with C50/1.4 (but of course, it doesn't have f/1.4-2.0). And when I compared the Tamron with Canon 24-70/2.8L. Wow! the Tamron's figures are very close to, or even better than, the Canon lens' on all ranges. It is also 1 pound lighter and cost only 1/3 of the Canon lens. As a validation, I checked the result of Canon 28-105, the one that I own. I agree with the result as it shows a mediocre result when the aperture is wide open.

  4. Dear all,

I am looking for an upgrade to my 28-105/3.5-4.5 USMII. I am

considering Canon 50/1.4 and the new Tamron 28-75/2.8. I am looking

for a high quality lens which will accompany me to go to Banff in

March, together with my 17-40/4 and 70-200/4. Both lenses are in the

same price range and they fill in the gap of the focal length. Even

though a zoom lens is obviously more convenient than a prime lens, I

believe I can easily get used to it in this focal length. For me,

the quality of the pictures is more important.

So I want to seek for your opinions on these two lenses. How are

they perform regarding to the color rendering and sharpness? Are

they significantly better than my 28-105? Thank you in advance.

    Cheers,

    Ivan

  5. I own a Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4 HSM EX. I am pretty disappointed by its

performance mainly because of its severe loss of light and blur at the

edge and corner even at f/5.6-8!!

I am considering the new 17-40 but most reviews and comments I can

find on the web are mainly based on DSLR, which 1.6x factor cannot

reflect the quality of the edge portion of a picture. Did anyone use

this lens with a film EOS? How's its performance and does it have my

aforementioned problems (loss of light and blur at the corner)? Thanks

    in advance.
