Some great answers there guys. The budget is around a couple of thousand dollars. I am quite happy to hack things. Shooting on bulb is a good idea, I already have all the lights etc. I just wanted to experiment and try something different.
Given that we are talking at around $50 per camera are there any more suggestions on kit.
Any other technical suggestions are always welcome

Ok here's the thing,
I want to try and make some simultaneous multi-camera images.
I think I need a 1/500 sec min shutter speed, preferably about
1/2000, and about 30 camers to be fired simultaneously. DOF can be
pretty small
The final images will be no bigger than 800 pixels by 800 pixels.
Will happily shoot film or digital
Given that I need to buy 30 of these suckers on zero budget what
cameras would you recommend for me to hack together
Solution for 2100 and 2200 incomplete image preview on large files

If you have a problem with incomplete printing or print preview when
printing large file on the Epson 2100 and 2200. Then I recommend the
following which has worked for me
On win2k
Goto start menu - settings - printers
In the printer dialogue (which lists all your printers) seltect file -
server properties.
Select the Advanced tab and change the printer spool file location to
a drive with lots of space preferably not your systems drive.
Now go back to the printer dialogue and right click on your printer,
select properties and select the advanced tab.
Switch spool documents to "start printing after last page is spooled"
Switch off "Enable advanced printing features"
This should do the trick.
This has been mentioned in other threads but i did not find all this
advice in the same thread
