Darius, you're not alone in your assessment. . .this particluar societal ring has been active for some time, and has proven time and time again that critical critiques are a waste of typing. Not what they're here for. And as was noted by another, in the "large" view, you can easily see Cherlyn's eraser work to bring out some mid-tones.

And really, Cherlyn, I'm not hacking on your work, I'm merely stating that compared to many other in the TRP, this image's appearance is inconsistent.

I'm going against the grain, I guess. I wholly appreciate the lighting. The mood. The technical finesse in post. The MUA. AND, I think the rest of the photog's portfolio (on website) is great - the skill shown in the specular highlights in the food shots, the comps in the fashion shots, the color management in ALL of her work...

The critical nature of many above seems to want to find flaws, and in some cases (as shown above) label things as "vapid," but my perspective is that I don't think I know of a single photographer on this site, nor have I in 5 years, that produces such a broad range of successful images, commerical though they may be, as illustrated on her website.

Which brings my thoughts to this: What's "successful" photography to you? To me? To the next guy? To the client? To the editor? My guess is that the maker of the POW thinks a successful image is one that pays her bills. . .which also means she's likely doing well in the eyes of the client and editor, the opinions that matter immediately.

Congrats on POW, Encone - I couldn't make that shot if I tried, and freely admit it. Great model, great lighting, great shot!

  1. Hi, Nicole! You're very kind - and sorry the images are gone!

I'll still be around in the forums, answering questions I can help with, and certainly asking for help sometimes, too, but for the most part will be refraining from putting my photographs here...

  2. Damn, Brian - just fantastic. Never thought to do this that night (ok, girlfriend was a little impatient).

Hat's off to you - it's really gorgeous (and solemn).

Not there tonight, the 5th anniversary. . .wonder if you made it.

Well let me help you end that debate...ENTER it. Do you have to enter a print? I've been absolutely delighted with the Pure b&w prints from Mpix.com - you have to order that paper, though.

    Am NOT. Hmph.

WOAH!!! Honestly, this is an AMAZING shot, Heather! The light bings just enough tonal range for great contrasts in the scales, and the composition is brilliant (leave it to a snake for great, leading lines).

Oh - and so glad you liked the new self portrait;) (I am NOT!).

I'd say you nailed the crop beautifully, and the over-exposed comment above didn't draw my attention...though the over-sharpened eyes did. I find a bit less, there, would really make it a brilliant shot.
