    Mandarin Duck.

Perfectly shot within the limitations of the kind of pic you are striving for. A much more challenging shot is an action shot with similar detail.
  1. It is hard to make a portrait distinctive, since we have all grown up on them. THis is a very beautiful subject and the pic as is as good as it can be given the limitations of the style.
  2. Sorry for the delayed response. If the duck is th focal point he needs ot be clear crisp and detailed -- obviously a duck. The colors of the"frame" are stunning but they overwhelm the subject. Start by getting a good pic of the duck. You can probably correct the "frame" to have the best of both worlds>

Hmm . . . Hard to find a reasonable middle gropund from these widely divergent comments. My two cents -- I've seen a lot worse and many better. I have taken literally thousands of shots over 25 years -- this is a keeper, or it would not have been posted on photo.net. When I look at the ratings I see the same people over and over giving my work very low ratings -- that's why I don't post here any more.
  3. A high power zoom would do the trick. Compositionally, this is a nice framing device. But the duck is too small relative to the overall composition -- even if you really crank up the brightness of the duck it still is lost in the picture. I would want to try different compositions.

It simply doesn't get better than this -- I agree this could well be a classic in many respects. Look at the other "sraircase" photos on photo, net -- this is in a different league. ANd just when you thought you had seen evey possible way to shoot stairs.

This looks like it came from the same period as the Flatiron Building. Composition is outstanding -- less grain would make this a truly amazing photo.
  4. Its the lines that distract -- the vase seems to be at an unusual angle to the "frame" of the arch and the lines of the arch are not parallel to the sides of the photo, nor are they perpendicular to one another. I am usually not this fussy but something seems out of kilter in the picture.
  5. Hard to tell as near as I can figure out it is the high winds when the ice forms. This is on the shore on the windward side of Lake Champlain and it is not unusual for there to be 40 to 50 MPH winds in late fall and early winter we live up the hill about a mile or two away and when the wind begins our house sounds like a ship in high wind.. Add freezing temps and anything can happen. It also could be that because of the wind, the ice does not form uniformly and, when it melts it leaves holes behind.

I cannot agree with the comments about whether this is or is not a pohtograph. I see it a lot, as when someone takes a photo of a photo. If we stick with such narrow definitions we could not accept any digital manipulation or to go further any darkroom manipulation. Bye bye Man Ray and others.
  6. To answer both questions, it is not a crop. I also don't know what "soft" means -- part of the lack of acuity is due to the constraints of photo.net as I have noticed a loss of clarity when the photo is displayed.

As the the direct look, I looked back at several shots taken that day. It was taken in day light, no flash and with a telephoto a fair distance from the statute. I do have others from directy below which do not capture the direct look.
