Why?
Well I felt that the background was too busy, but I did not want to isolate the player too much.
Actually I was just fiddling about and quite like the result.

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at the lens details. If this image is at 1.6 magnification, what distance are you from the object? Does the lens have a built in extension tube, for the higher magnification. Do you use a brighter focussing screen or is it the standard one, or does the flash have illumination as well as flash. My experience of getting so close to the object is that one tends to cast a shadow on the object,making focussing difficult.
Have you a photograph of your setup showing how the lens extends? The Canon site does not show a great deal.

What F stop did you use and what lighting?
Focus is excellent, but are they cropped.
With that kind of lens, unless you have a large extension tube, you cannot get more than life size. How long are the ants?
