This is a good attempt. reminds me of my highschool days when photography used to be vague and it had no rules. Today I know too much and have to stick to too many rules which takes away the "nakedness" of raw imagery of photography imo.

Anyway on this picture, it's amazing how simple things in life often become very photogenic from different anlges etc. I suppose the only few things I can offer to improve the shot would have been if it was a tad bit sharper, perhaps greater depth of field to make the right handle abit more sharper, although I understand what you were trying to achieve with the angle of the shot and trying to show scale via depth of field, but I don't think that DOF being used as a scalin tool works very well in this case. Also I don't like the fill flash being only isolated to the seat, seems very unnatural to me. The shot lacks alittle in overall "background interest" either blur the background totally (small DOF) or sharpen the lot with large DOF, you kind of got it in between. Perhaps including a horizon or the rest of the park, or maybe blurred children playing in the background perhaps. It all depends on the mood you are trying to set. I think the only other few things about this shot is that the ground detracts from the image. I think you could have achieved the interest of the actual swing if you had changed angles and shot the sky instead perhaps. The dark murky background changes the mood of the whole image to dark and dreary as apposed to happy and playful which is what a swing is, it kind of makes the whole shot look almost sinister as the main subject (the swing) is also quite contrasty and "bold".

Objects that also could have been removed are the piece of paper top left, and the legs of the swing kind of detract from the image instead of add to it. Try to go out to the park just before sunset if possible, I find daylight savings time a gem as it allows me 2 -3 hours after work to go out and get great light for just that reason.

All in all keep up the good work. I have a soft spot for abstract photography. I think it is very interesting to highlight everyday objects. The best way to get the best abstract shots is to burn film, and lots of it. You can still apply the 1/3rd rule to alot fo your adstract work without taking away from the spontaneousness of your photography. Also try to detract from flash, try and limit yourself to just natural light, you can find lots of great naturral light at the times mentioned above. try to tell a small story with each shot, goes along way to making an interesting abstract...

    Happy snapping!
