It's sad they are selling these things to consumers. If I want a cheap lens I would switch to Canon. If you want to blow away people with your images get a couple of prime lens or buy a pro zoom lens. There is no way that the G's will give the same image quality, build quality than even an early Nikkor lens.
I can use any of my lens from the 60's and still get better image quality than a G. These things are targeted at our ever increasing throw away society. If you ever drop one or it malfunctions good luck. I was on vacation recently in Spain, the guy next to me had just switched lens and dropped his new G. What a mess, my Non G lens have never let me down.
I agree with the earlier post that you should be able to see the difference on a 4x6 print. I think people are expecting that these lens are going to be amazing just because they say Nikon. It's like people thinking the Tri-Elmar from Leica should of been amazing but its just an average semi-zoom.

If you want to keep the price of a camera try either a M4-2 or M4-P. They both are great cameras, very dependable and rugged. I still use the M4-P, I sold the M4-2 to buy the M6-TTL. It's nice to have a meter in camera but you just get use to always using a meter. M4-2 go for $800 and M4-P's in very good condition go for $1000. Never buy a beater with dents.
If you are going to try one camera one lens. A 35mm 1.4 non asph can usually be bought for about $800 US. It provides all the speed you need from one lens and the images speak for them selves. The asph can be found for about $1300 used. It's amazing but if you have never used the asph then the non-asph will still look amazing. Of course if you have always liked the look of a 50mm, the 2.0 can be bought for around $500. I always have liked the 50mm, it fits in your coat pocket and the images are always winners.

Here is my list...
Noct with no black corners, a twist on lens hood, or a locking hood in the lens.
35mm 1.0, my Noct is so lonely. The 35 asph is already big so why not make it a like bit bigger and give me my 35mm 1.0 asph.
21mm 2.0, a little reality here, would I want a 1.0 of course but I know it would be bigger than the 50mm Noct
A real motor drive, can't Leica buy the technology from a Nikon F3 motor drive, make it smaller and let me eat as much film as I like. If you have to shot gun a subject does it matter how loud your camera is.

I've used several Noct 1.0's over the years on every type of camera. I have not had to match camera to lens. The Noct give the same results on any camera. I think it's a issue of user error.
Gray M7's have landed
in Leica and Rangefinders

Just wait a few months, the M7 will sell for $1800 used, if not new. This will probably drive the price of average M6 and M6ttl's even lower. Let the new owner go thru the hassle of any problems that might crop up.
