<p>Today my spot meter exhibited the same behavior as the original poster. I cleaned all the contacts (prism, back, lens) and nothing worked. i use a handheld meter all the time, so I'll just live with the broken meter instead of repairing it.</p>

I have the 5d and you can force rear curtain flash if you use the sync port on the side of the camera body. I think the hotshoe contacts aren't triggered the same way as the sync port.

I have both the D70 and D200. and both bodies are capable of rear curtain flash trigger regardless of whatever is attached to the hotshoe. Curtain sync has nothing to do with the D70s electronic shutter.

If you have a nikon MF body you can use an E-series 28mm lens (very cheap and compact) and then stack the filters on. This is similar to the paper tube extension mentioned above but also lets you add a polarizer to increase colour saturation (If the Lomo-look is what you are after)
