  1. Hello Travis,

    Congratulations!

I am not sure if you remember me, I used to post here quite a bit a couple of years ago.

I just went through the similar experience last week when our son (third child) was born. I used Fuji S3pro and 17-55 zoom, set at ISO-800/1600.

Six years ago, I used M6 with 35 (either 1.4/2.0, can't remember), using ISO-1600 film.

On both occasions, I also used video (DV). To me, the video is more valuable than photos to the kids, as they really enjoys it!

  2. "I'm curious about this new, nice camera, but I'd love to hear more on the way it handles, the effectiveness and real-life usability of the electronic viewfinder, the battery life in real shooting."

I have not held the Leica D2 (nor seen one!), so I cannot compare the Panasonic with it. Generally, I really like the feeling of the Panasonic. The focusing ring and the aperture ring (on the lense) give it the M feeling. THe manual zoom on the lens is probably similar to a normal SLR zoom. The camera is light, but feels well-built and solid. I really like the rubber finish and the grip of the LC1. The black finish and the dials with white markings make it appear like a black M as well. The viewfinder, pretty useless IMO, also makes the camera appear to be more like a rangefinder.

The response time (lag time, etc) is very acceptable. The fact that zoom is manual (not electronically controlled like other digicams) helps a lot (and fast!!). It just feels much better than other digicams (compared to Olympus 5050/Canon S40/ and even Fuji S2pro!!).

Apart from Canon 10D which I also like a lot, this is the most solid feeling digicam that I have used. However, you won't get the "real solid" feeling of Leica M/R, but I am very happy with it. Oh, I paid around $1200 for it (in Hong Kong - I know this is probably high in HK, but this is the only place that have the camera in stock).

    Best,

    Noddy

  4. Steve,

I am probably infected from some Brit's sense of humour.

Sine I have read a long long post about "wanker and stuff" (you started it, I remember)

I hope it should be quite safe to post a bit about the topic here..(hope you don't

    mind, Allen).

When I was a teenager my dad sent me off to a boarding school in England. I had a

pretty fixed mindset about the Brits that they were really propper and conservative.

And guess what! The very first thing that the House Master (teacher) asked me was

"do you know how do masturbate? (or something along this line). He went on for

quite a while just to make sure that I did know how to perform the task and that I

would do it!! At least often enought for me not to get too stressed out!!!

This kind of attitude is totally different from in the East where people tend to avoid

talking about the subject (practicing or not depends on personal preference).

    Anyway...

Back to photography. Good self portrait, Allen.

  5. Thx Harvey,

This isn't a bad idea. My situation is this. I like the square format, built quality and

lenses of the Hassy (used 501 for a while) but dislike the bulk. I used the Fuji MF

    zoom (645zi or

something) but found the lens to be much too slow. I also found the Contax 645 to

be too bulky for taking to places (perhaps I shouldn't expect to take the 645 to

    places)

I think the Rolleiflex has the

combination of square format, great lens and f2.8. And it's not too bulky to take with

    me to places.

How do you like the Mamiya rangefinder?

  6. When the financial crisis hit in 1997 the THB went from 25/1 USD to 50/1 USD within

a couple of months. All the camera gear that I I had jumped in value overnight, but

all the ones that I haven't bought...well...I could no longer afford!!!

I sold my Noct after the THB devalued at the same price that I bought new. I thought I

was clever! Now I cannot afford to buy it again. How stupid!

  7. The question must have sound silly.

I asked a dealer here in Bangkok how much he can get the Rolleiflex FX (has to be

shipped from Hong Kong because the representative in Thailand is going to quote

something like 5x the price). He checked the price and told me its 90,000 THB which

is around 2200 USD, the same as a new M7 here.

I checked the price at BH and other places and they only have the GX (75 and 80

aniversary), and they seem to be more expensive. So my question should have been

"is 2200 USD a good price for a new Rolleiflex FX ?

    Sorry about this!
