I have another suggestion. Why not take the 24-85D f/2.8-4. I own this lens and since it is IF you only need to turn the focus ring just a bit, so focussing is more rapid. It also has an excellent macro mode which can put the subject up to 1/2 the real size on the negative.
I use it next to the 80-400VR and think together they make an excellent combination from 24-400mm.
The 24-85D lens has a diafragm ring so it can still be used with manual cameras, unlike the newer 24-85G.
All the reviews I have read state that the 24-85D has better optics than the 28-105 plus you get some more wide angle. You loose some tele but you don't need that because of the 80-400.
