1.
I tried to be a 'camera snob' and insist on full manual on a small camera. Live and learn. With aperture restrictions of small cameras, full manual IMO doesn't get you much. Until now, I've carried around my trusty Coolpix 5100. Great camera with 'full manual' but a little to big to put in your pocket, so I didn't carry it more than I did carry it.
Then I went to a Leica CLux-2. Beautiful, but no manual control to speak of, pricey, and delicate. I managed to crack the screen even though I always keep it in a case. (Spare battery in separate compartment probably acted as a lever when I hit bumped into something?)
A friend turned me on to the Canon SD780IS a couple of days ago. As far as I am concerned, this is the perfect pocket camera for serious photographers.
Really small, great feel, enough control but not manual for manual's sake, comes in flat black, great colorimitry and overall performance (even not considering its size).
I've done quite a bit of shooting with it and I've posted some shots. These were done in the 12mpx mode resized to 800-600 and posted. The one closeup of the ceramic bird was cropped from the original (also posted) and then shrunk slightly to 800-600.
I hope this helps your decision.
If you don't have a camera with you, you will miss the shot.
