  1. LINN LP12- been around just about as long in hifi terms and still a modern day reference.

SME V- trouble is, it doesn't work well with the above.

Koetsu- handmade by a Japanese elf.

JADIS- just as rarified, watt for watt one of the most expensive and as quirky as they come.

Quad electrostatics- Peter Walker's design goes back to the birth of the Leica M3 and in its latest form still a contender.

Sorry, American muscle-amp hifi just do not come acroos to me as very Leica-like. Lack subtlety and call too much attention to themselves, unlike a Leica M.

  2. I emailed Dr. Phillips sometime in October 2003. Dr. Phillips said that he was not taking orders then and to email him again in December 2003. I did that. Meanwhile, he posted a brochure to me. Dr. Phillips told me in December 2003 that he would be taking orders in January 2004 and said that he would be emailing me again to confirm if he should put my name on his list in January 2004. He said that it was okay if I changed my mind. In January 2004, I received that email from him. However, due to a sudden family need for funds, I was out of coin and could not place my name on his list. Dr. Phillips was understanding and kind. He said that it was not a problem, wished me well and said that he hoped that I would consider his camera again when I had enough funds to purchase an 8x10. Subsequently, he emailed me his change in email address.

I have had a pleasant experience dealing with Dr. Phillips. He was always patient with my technical questions. I found him to be a man of honor and integrity.

  3. Keith, seems as if you already have all the technical skills that you need and then some.

The San Francisco Art Institute (at Chestnut just up the hill from Fisherman's Wharf) is an art school in the purest sense of the word. It teaches you how to think about art with photography as your medium. It is not about fill flash and not about the Zone System. It is about using photograhy as a medium to depict the world as you see it visually.

It is strong on thinking conceptually. It is a very fine art school similar to CalArts in Southern California with a strong faculty. I recommend it highly.

What this means is that you'll be looked at quzzically by those who are used to the conventions of photography. If Phillip Lorca Di Corcia, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, et al. are more your thing, check out its programme.

If you're trying to be reunited with your creative haptic half, SFAI is for you. As I said, you already have all the technical skills you need; what you need now is the thinking to know when to apply them.

N.B. Whether it helps you to survive as a photographer in the real world upon graduation is strictly up to you. Certainly, an unusual portfolio and original conceptual thinking will make you a standout. Inez and Vinoodh are fashion photographers whose work is greatly admired in the art world.

  4. The Flashmeter V can be set to read Ambient, Flash, or Ambient+Flash.

To read Flash, you set it in either Cord or Non-Cord mode. To read Ambient+Flash, you set it in ANALYSE mode.

You have obviously set it in ANALYSE which gives you a percentage of Ambient+Flash.

  5. By portraits, I'll presume that you mean a pretty tight one person close-up i.e. head and shoulders.

I'd spring for the 180mm which gives a nice compression effect although I use the 210mm APO personally. The 180mm is incredibly sharp and reasonably priced.

You may also want to look at the 150mm for a one person full-length portrait.

  6. Walter Melrose has this to say about his Mola Dishes when someone asked about the availability of a silver finish:

The process is anodizing, although the reflector

    would be silver and

reflective, it would not be polished.

We have not produced this style of surface for

    more than 10 years.

    The reasons are as follows:

A silver surface is much cooler in colour

temperature and tends to add a cyan

    cast to film.

The silver surface does not allow the light to

    follow the contours of the

    reflector as they were intended.

Although the silver surface gives the impression

    of greater output it does

not apply to function, our white surface is 90%

    reflectance and very efficient.

  7. Strictly speaking, the Silver Dish was developed by Profoto for still lives where specular highlights are desired on objects; the White Beauty Dish is the one for beauty shots. But who is to say that you cannot use the Silver Dish anyway you wish.

Mola Softlights make larger ones; check out their website. Unlike softboxes, these dishes do focus the light somewhat optimally at a prescribed distance so the effect is a little different with darker shadows.

  8. A friend has kindly forwarded me this reply from Beat Rhyner of Bron CH:

"On our side we have tested the motor generator

    Honda EU 30is. This generator

allows to connect two compact units Minipuls C80.

    At 100% flash energy the

charging time of these compact units was about

    1,8 seconds."

This dispels all the poppycock that has been thrown around here.
