  1. Well of the 22 ages reported so far I get an average age of 40.77 years with the youngest at 19 and oldest at 71.

"Most of all the M cameras ever made are sleeping in a collector's showcase" makes me wonder how wise it is to be paying premiums for near perfect M's. How many "New Old Stock" M's are out htere and what, if anything, could happen to cause us to suddenly have a glut? What would happen to values of not so great M's. If I read that sentence litterally then there ay be more "New Old Stock" M3's in storage than are being used.

  2. If you are a collector the point of resale is very big. Look at the big auction site. M7's used are running 1600+ (list 2500) (with the few we've seen) and M6 TTL's (list 2000) running 1200 while there is at least one R8 (list 2500) that you could buy for 980.00. This is partially because the R9 has comeout at the same list (about) as the R8. Maybe the M6 owners should be very happy the M7 came out $500.00 more. Just a thought if you are likely to be reselling soon. If you are gonna keep it and use it too take picture none of what I said should really matter.
  3. These Zeiss lenses will work on the M cameras? So someone who loves his TLR with the 80mm Planar could get one for his M camera? If this is correct then I see this as a coup for M camera owners. Look at the whole new world it opens up. Leica does not have an 80mm. Add it to your selection and see what kind of look it gives. I think this is great news. More demand for M lenses and more typesof M lenses to pick from. More pressure for digital applications. Just great. OK what did I do with those rose colored glasses. Don't know about the body but I am very excited.
  4. I was wondering if you can tell me if the backs of all the M cameras

are interchangable? I keep hearing rumors of someone someday

creating a digital back for the M camera and I am wondering if it

will be likely to work with all models or just certain ones like the

M7. This is based solely on physical dimension.

  5. My M7 reminds me when the film speed setting is being manually over-riden by blinking a red light. Works like a charm. My film cannisters come out. My battery cover covers the battery. I don't have a "list".

My experience has been wonderful and I believe that you are cheating yourself if you continue to use what you don't really want because of some rumors.

  6. I think apples are better than oranges. Persoanlly I am still a little bit nervous about the media storage of digital media. I wonder what the life is. Say you take a 35mm film picture today. We know that the negative will be good for a very long time. What if you write that file to a CD and in 25 years you pull that CD out and it is now blank. Just a thought.

I hate getting home with my film from an unreal shoot, waiting a couple days for development, then finding out I missed the right shot. With digital I would have known on the spot and re-shot it. I don't know, maybe I like oranges more then apples.

Wait, I'll buy a bit of both and enjoy them for they were designed to do. Of course that is not what you asked. would I invest in apples or oranges. I mean, I may have had the same thoughts. If I have a mint M3 and film goes the way of vinyl records will my M3 go the same way? Does its historical importance save it for ever? If I buy expensive Leica lenses will they work with future Leica digital equipment?

Don't trust anyone who says they do KNOW. 10 years from now we may have seen digital cameras eclipsed by some other technology that leaves all of it behind. Think about what we have seen over the last 10 years and quadruple that for the next ten. Maybe that digital M leica back will even print the pics.

Good luck to us all. By the way I love the way an M3 feels. I will always hope that someone will make a way to keep it modern.

  7. Can someone from Leica post a thorough explanation of Grey versus import versus whatever market? I have recently learned that Nikon USA and its service centers will NOT even consider working on a grey camera for any price. I believe Hasselblad does the same. Is Leica New Jersey restricting their work on grey market items? How do we protect ourselves when we are buying recent used goods, that might have been bought originally as a grey market item, on the various auction sites and even right here on this forum?
  8. New ones cost what they do so they are more expensive than the used ones. Not much more expensive. If they reduced them too much you would always pay more for a used one.

Over the weekend on the big auction site I saw 2 M3 boxs, yes empty boxs, sell for around $170.00 each. I just bought a Nikon F with eyelevel prism in good working order for $195.00 (no box).

I guess I don't have the answer for you either.

  9. To clerify, I am talking about the leather covering on the camera itself. I do not have the ER case. The body is in near mint shape. This condition makes me believe that the camera sat in a ER case for a long time and I know that those cases can sometimes embed an odor in the body leather.
  10. I just purchased a very nice old Nikon F body. This body has that

kindof old musty smell to it. Is it possible to clean that out of

the leather? I noticed that when I raise the camera to my eye the

smell is strong. With the back off it is almost gone. I am

wondering if something like Lexol cleaner and then conditioner would

help or might it react with the glue and ruin everything? Any help

    would be great. Thanks
