My comments are way late, but I had to chime in. I love this shot. My only complaint is the words on the guy's shirt...but you've beat yourself up over the text much too much already, so I won't rub any salt into the wounds.

The first is my favorite shot. I'll have to read through and see how you did it. If you used strobes, may I suggest trying this shot again with colored gels? (I have no experience with strobes or gels, but I think this type of shot might look really cool with some red, blue and yellow glow in the air.)

Nice shot. Also a good reminder that I should drive to a nearby winery to see what they've got growing these days.

Me...I never tire of agriculture shots. I love the neatly furrowed rows, the rolling hills, the color that often comes with ag shots...and yours has them all. Very, very nice.

    Here, kitty-kitty.

Actually, it looks like our feline is saying "here mousy-mousy". Too bad the subject of the "hunt" wasn't in the photo.

This is one of those odd photos where a furry cat looks out of focus (soft) while the foreground and background look sharp. I have no suggestions as I'm not sure there would have been anyway around it.

I adore cats, even though I no longer have one of my own. He passed after 13 years as my faithful companion. But I still remember how marvelously sneaky and stealth-like he was. I think I would have preferred seeing that sneakiness portrayed here. That is, the half-seen, watchful kitty without the paw in the air.

  1. The decisivement moment wasn't as much about football (soccer, depending on where you live) as it was about the moment the photographer snapped the pic.

These guys are caught mid-air, sharp, with great expressions on their faces. Very nice shot!

I'd like to add that I even like the background as the trees help outline the players. Had they not been there, that building in the background might have been distracting.

  2. Very nice shot. There's enough light to catch the glittering net and the water on the pier. The darkness of the man and poles adds mystery to the shot. Black and white is a good choice for this shot. As for the hand and pole, it doesn't bother me in the least. Too bad there wasn't a boat out on the water--but then, you can't have everything.

So it's not a masterpiece...but it does fit the theme and it did make me smile. At first, I thought it an odd title because the guy is in partial shade and has his face shielded by the tabloid. And then I saw which tabloid. Good work.
  3. PT, this isn't just some cheesy photo. You showed a GRATE deal of imagination in taking this shot. When I first saw it, I thought it was a narrow mirrored hallway with lights adding texture to the wall. The handle adds interest to the "light at the end of the tunnel" look.
  4. I'm going to be the odd man (woman) out. The only thing I find "wrong" is the angle of the shot. I'd have preferred the squares to be shot on a perfect angle, right up the middle of the black and white corners.

Other than that, I really like this shot. I love the white whites and the black blacks. It's so shiny that it almost looks like black and white marble in this photo.

It's clean, it's crisp and it's neat. It's also the one that first caught my eye when I looked at the patterns page.

Very nice shot, Eric. The simple foreground adds much interest to this shot and I like the sunburst effect you captured.

I also thank you for so graciously explaining your merging technique. I look forward to trying it myself.

    BADger

          8

I had no problem with the photo fitting the theme. My first thought was of a BADger rooting through a campground garbage can. BAD BADger! LOL

The depth of field is good, but I too would have liked to see a little more depth of color. Not sure how I would have done it though.

    Nature?

I could have sworn I'd already commented on this one. Maybe I failed to click the button.

    Anyway...

Great fit to the them. I love the texture of the bottle and the way it's color brings out the blue of the sky...or doesn't the blue of the sky bring out the color of the bottle? The colors are very pleasing...even if the theme is somewhat sad.

Great close-up of the bottle, forgotten in the weeds that grow up around it. Excellent depth of field and fabulous perspective. I only wish there were a couple bigger clouds in the sky, but what's a photographer to do about weather, clouds and such, right?

I like it. The colors, the clock background, even the clock background. And the note on the clock doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it speaks to what is "bad" about the coffee break. (I may be jumping to conclusions, but the clock background leads me to believe the employee is at an extended coffee break.)

I'm a horrible flash photographer, so I'm especially impressed by the way you've captured the detail and color of the clock rim without all the glare and highlight problems I would have had. And I think the torn paper with the little paper residue clinging to the top helps add interest. I also think a yellow sticky note would have worked just as well...but I wonder if the color would have drawn attention away from the clock.

  5. I had to come back to this one. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this photo is truly a clever way to make a point--even if some of us don't quite get it at first. That is no reflection on the photographer at all. BTW...excellent South America...I don't know how I could have mistaken it for a T-bone steak residue.

The lighting is very good, with super soft shadows that don't detract from the image. I do agree with the poster that said the fork/knife set up had a clock quality. Perhaps moving the fork off South America and south a bit might help.

  6. South America...now I get it. I thought it was a vegetarian statement with the red portion being the spot where a super rare T-bone stead once sat. I couldn't figure out how it fit the forest title until I read another view.

There's good detail on the plate, capturing the rim and all. Exposure seems fine. The stark white against the liquid red is really eye-catching. And yet, I can't pinpoint the reason why this shot doesn't move me????

  7. I can't stop laughing at this shot. But at the same time, I feel so bad for your pooch. He's standing there like a very well behaved doggie, looking at you with eye that seem to say, "I've had enough humiliation already. Do you have to document it for the world?" Give Junta an ear rub for me.
  8. Beautiful! I love the color of the sky and the contrast between new and old buildings and the light and dark gravel surrounding the tracks. It creates a photo that's not only pleasing to the eye but interesting to the mind.

Me, I'm sick of summer. I wish we had more "gloomy" days in Southern California.

    Stairway

          4
I don't find the staircase boring at all. I think a static shot of the ocean itself would have been hum-drum. Normally, I'm not too fond of pictures that show the reflections of light but I think it works here. I think one of the reasons I'm drawn to this photo is the simplicity and the horizontal yellow lines. Good job.

    Chair

          4

Simple, peaceful and gives a real sense of quiet. I like it a lot.

I do think it could use a teeny-tiny bit more color intensity, which can be done using curves in Photoshop. And I'd like to see a tad more room at the base of the chair.

Do, however, take my comments with a grain of salt. A good photographer I'm not.

  9. I love this shot. The bright blue and red doors gives this photo a cheery feel while the brick and wood design take the view back in time. I think you've done well to use the tilt to your advantage by including the steps in the shot.

    Death Row

          17

Great shot, excellent fit to the them and brillant idea!

Death Row definitely fits this photo. However, when I saw the chain and cigarettes, "Chain Smoking" immediately came to mind.

    El Sofa #5

          3
I really like this picture. The wonderfully designed sofa, the parquet flooring and the papered wall provides a great set for this man's picture. He looks like a weary businessman waiting for an appointment in an empty office. There's a really nice feel to it.
  10. Lovely shot. I really like the way you've cropped it for more of a "panoramic" view.

I'm glad to see that you are still around. I've not seen you on the forum in months and was wondering where you'd gone. I guess you, unlike some of us, are out shooting instead of posting.

  11. I cheated. I read the other reviews so I could figure out how this picture fit the theme. Steroids...now I get it. Funny, I thought they were Alka-Seltzer tablets.

I like the white on clear on white. I especially like the texture in the knit fabric you used as a base. Even the tablets have a sort of texture to them. Well done!
