Thanks all of you who have tried to answer my question, not totally successfully it seems. I'll have a go with the elastic and the zipper though it does seem a bit crude.

My Summicron 35mm has a tab and since it was the first lens I used
on my M6 I learned to focus quite well by the feel of the tab. My
Summilux 50mm doesn't have a tab and I know I would be happier if it
did. Can tabs be added on? Does one have to go to a dealer or is
there a way of making something oneself?

My reaction was similar to the French Leicalady - whose post seems to have disappeared. But I know what you meant Craig. I live in Wales UK, use an M7 and lurk nearly every night. Never have the courage to join in with the essentially male chat.

Thank you Trevor for sharing your super photos. Thanks also for your techie advice from which others can learn something - and me in particular. My toe has been hovering over the digital water for months and I think I am now going to plunge in.

Roger - how ever did you recognize six of the forumers? Were they all wearing Leicas?

I just love the way this forum winds itself along from a simple topic to expressions of regicide. Thank goodness I have no Royal connections and can look forward to future correspondence with Trevor without worrying as to whether or not I have my back to the wall.

OT Did Patrick Lichfield devalue our Leicas today?
In a radio interview on BBC 2 this morning Patrick Lichfield firmly
put the nail into film cameras. I imagine that sales of digitals
really whooped up in London today! He said he has not used a roll of
film for 4 years and saves 80,000 pounds sterling a year in film. He
referred to Terry O Neill as an old codger and a bit of a dinosaur
and said that to keep up with the ?young guys? one has to go
digital - with a small plug for Olympus. When questioned about
archives he reckoned that data stored on disk would last as long as
negatives. He finished by saying ?I?ve never liked taking photos as
much as I do today?.
When Lord Lichfield makes such utterances he will undoubtedly
influence a lot of people. However, that doesn?t include me and I
will bear with being termed an old codger and hope that my M7 will
still have some value when I kick up the daisies.
In the UK you can hear the interview until midnight on the following
link.

Thanks Trevor for listing the programme about Edward Hardman. I am doing my late-night lurking and realised I had missed it. Fortunately it is on again at 12.50am so I will set up the video recorder to enjoy it tomorrow. Thanks also for your previous
mentions of photography-related programmes ? keep at it please.

Marc, I hope you are going to print out this thread to amuse your Mom and let her read what everyone thinks she ?ought? to have. Also, I suggest that you take your Mom to the camera shop ? and let her choose?.I know that?s what I would like best. As you well know, men and women have different views about cameras! On holiday, there are times when I find my M7 gets very heavy so lightness seems important. Tell us what you eventually give her.

Yes Karl I had noticed that this was an all-male response. Oscar Wilde wrote ?One should never trust a woman who tells one her real age. A woman who would tell one that, would tell one anything?.
Since I want to be 'trusted' on this forum I?ll remain quiet on the subject. However, this thread has been fun - and revealing!

You don't realise how much you love it until you don't have it! I felt quite lost without my daily fix of forum chat. However, I might not have seen the great 'Awards' photos without those helpful links.

If that's his backyard I don't think I would want to stop. Yes, cool, but shouldn't he do something about that paunch. Anyway, no deal for me unless he likes older women! Nice idea though.
-
No,Hektor. The temperature on this forum gets quite hot enough without any input from me.

At last, a _real_ difference between the ladies and the men! With a 38D cup my lens fits neatly into the divide and my camera is comfortably cushioned when I reload. Lucky me! And yes, I hold the baseplate between my teeth. Should I really be discussing such personal details here?
-
Yes, Lutz, you are right. Narelle Autio, a young Australian. I didn't know that before - just read it on the Leica webpage :-)

In my emailed newsletter from Leica I see that the winner was Andrea
Hoyer, German-born Leica photographer now living in New York. And
another woman, Vanessa Winship, a Brit living in Athens was one of
the two others highly commended.
Im not a feminist but it is nice to see the girls doing well. Some
of Andreas images are very interesting. What do others think?

Thanks for your input. I do as Gary does and that seems enough.

Ive noticed that the majority of photos shown on this forum have
neat notes of what camera was used, exposure details, film, etc.
Does this mean that you keep careful notes when shooting? In theory
I know I ought to keep records, but in practice I never do. Maybe I
would learn from some of my mistakes if I was a bit more organised.
So, what do you do?

Im going back to Patricks original question which was
<a majority of photographers are of the male gender. My question is simply - why?>
This is something that I (female Leica shooter) have also wondered about. Among my own circle of friends I can think of only two or three who are as passionately interested as I am in capturing visual images of some merit. However, I have noticed that many women are now buying their own digital cameras and point and shoots which they say are so easy to use. Sadly, however, they seem only interested in what I call snappy snaps something to record a family event, a meeting with friends or holidays. They dont appear to want anything better.
In the last two issues of Amateur Photographer I see only one womans name in featured work and competition winners and one editorial mention regarding a new book of work by the talented (and well-known in the UK) female photographer Fay Godwin.
So the answer to Patricks question is that it must be gender related. But _I_ dont know why. Artistic talent is as common amongst women as it is for men, so I dont know why women are less inclined to express this through a cameras lens. Maybe they dont have the luxury of enough free time to develop their skills in this direction or maybe it just doesnt turn them on. However, I do know of some extremely good female photographers and when they are good, they are outstandingly so.
So, guys, just keep hypothesising on the question. It makes interesting reading.

'Diolch' Trevor. I have also looked you up and see that you still have hair on your head. Apologies for inferring otherwise!!

Trevor, I noticed you signed off with TTFN. Showing your age a bit, or maybe you know it from second time around. For those who want to know it stands for "Ta, ta for now" and came from a British war-time radio show called ITMA (It's That Man Again), the man in question being Tommy Handley, long since kicking up the daisies.
-
Im lurking here and hardly miss a daily dial-up to see what you men are discussing. Your ingenuity in finding questions to ask is remarkable. For instance, I could never have thought of asking which eye one uses to view with and I had to go to my M7 to find out which! When I think of a really interesting question youll know about it. In the meantime Ill carry on taking pictures.
