  1. I hate to be a wet blanket re this subject, but after flying over 24,000 hours for a Major U.S. Airline, I think this is a good way to commit suicide. Flying is a dangerous business for a neophyte and demands a lot of attention, I would say 100%. If something goes wrong, there is only one way to go. If you can't afford to do it properly, don't do it! DC 10 driver
  2. I am the new owner of a 2200 and am very pleased with its performance. I was surprised to find out how quickly it drinks Light Cyan and Light Magenta Inks! I was even more surprised to find that both ATLTECH and B&H are both out of stock on Light Cyan. (Buy a good supply of these Two Colours if you find them). Has anyone on the net had any experience with Ilford Paper on this printer? Kodak Paper is a major bust!!! Pete Harvey
  3. I have a D60 purchased in Gainesville, FL at Harmon's. I paid the suggested list price for it, and have been using it with my 28-135 IS Lens. It takes great pictures: the camera will do far better than My Ability to take a masterpiece. There is the 1.4 factor to remember as the CMOS Element isn't the same size as a 35mm film. The D1 is a completely different camera, and comparisons are available on digitalfocus.net. I don't have the ability to but a 1D, but am delighted with the D60 and an HP Photo Smart Printer
  4. The Bell South DSL Modem would not function in either of the "add on"

devices. It constantly showed that it needed more power. The device that was added was an Intel Camera! It would not function in either of the add on devices- all of the Four Ports were inop. Another usb device was added and it functioned well in all Four Ports. The addition of the pci cards seems to have solved the problem. I use a 400W PS and am not the only affected computer in the area. It seems that there are Two Types of devices, Primary and Secondary. Pete H

  5. Glen, if I had been responsible for the screw up with the USB Ports, I would have agreed, but, the computer went to the shop, where both technicians have degrees in computer maintenance etc from the local college, and they seem pretty well clued in. It most certainly was not user error,I flew a lot of heavy tin turkeys and I may be a lousy photographer, but I can, (after 24,000 hrs) put a plug in a hole, and I hold British and Canadian A&E Licences. Any other ideas? Pete H
  6. Adding a New u.s.b. appliance to My Computer required addition of an

additional u.s.b. port. Dealer provided a Four Port Addition powered

by Transformer. Screen told me it couldn't provide enough power forDSL

modem. Tried an adapter like a cube with a shielded cord, supposed to

make Four Extra adapters. Still inop. Finally had to install a PCI

board with Two extra ports which works fine. My question is if USB

attachments come in Primary and Secondary Types, and why didn't the

Two Previous type adaptors work? (They checked out fine mechanically!)

Bill Gates seems to think that over 120 usb devices can be powered by

USB. Using a 400 Watt P.S. Appreciate info for comp. neophyte. Pete H.

  7. My Son and I are taking a trip at the end of May,via Air Canada. He will be leaving from Atlanta. He plans on using an Olympus E-20 with a fair supply of recording media. My question, "Is recording media affected in any way by X-Rays?". I apologize for flogging a dead horse! Incidentally, I have found a Store in YHZ that will order anything I need, and they say they do Custom B&W and Colour Developing

I will be using A couple of Canon EOS bodies as I need an IS Lens due to "tempus fugiting" I realize this isn't a Leica Question, but I enjoy the erudition of respondents. Also using an Adorama Monopod.

    Tnx., Pete H

  8. My Son has just purchased an Olympus E20. He has sent me several files

and they are all impossible to view! I get about 2" of picture, about 1.5" of black, then a mish mash of single lines, black and colour. He says that he can transmit the pictures to his work site, and they are all fine. I can read all the files on this net and others on Netscape with no trouble. He is on Bell South net, and I am on AT&T, before I panic and buy a new computer, can anyone help me? I apologize for the Non Leica Question, but I realy am starting to feel my 75 years, when facwd with this sort of problem. Thanks in anticipation, Pete

  9. I learned how to process B&W Film in 1944, did the same with color

when the stuff was available over Forty Years ago. When I moved to FL

in 1986, I sold, to my regret a Besseler CB7FRSTD enlarger and a Leitz

Focomat, that had belonged to Gracy Fields, (purchased from Wallace

Heaton, in New Bond Street, London). It's just that at 74, I don't

fancy screwing up Film that I would like to have done at a standard,

comparable to San Miguel Labs. I reiterate, are there any decent B&W

Canadian Labs or should I use UPS and pray? Pete

  10. I'm 74.Always feel guilty on this group as I prefer SLR's. Please

don't flame me. Started in'45 with a Luftwaffe 3C for which the

previous owner had no further use. Being a retired airframe driver,I

don't have a great deal of disposeable income. Use an SL and an R4.

    Pete

  11. I have a Minolta 1 degree Auto Spot Meter, #212690. It is the Old Mechanical Type, with a Motor Driven Dial. Minolta advize that they no longer service this meter. It seems to work perfectly, but I would like to have it calibrated. (Not a New Acquisition, but in My Possession for about Thirty Years). Could anyone please advize of a reputable firm that can do the work? Sorry it isn't Leica related, but

the group is a great source of knowledge. Incidentally, I ordered a Series 6 Orange Filter from B&H Two Months ago, still waiting. (Hoya I believe). I have a Perfect Series 8 that I will give to anyone who needs it. Pete Harvey

  12. Should an R4 Drive function when off the camera, and it is actuated? I have been given One and am loath to try it on My newly CLA'd R4 in case it pulls the transport mechanism apart. Sorry to ask such an uninteresting question of the group, but I just want to make sure!

    Pete

  13. FWIW, I ordered a Medium Yellow Filter from B&H, (used). Series 7

for 28 Elmarit R. I cleaned it, very carefully, and to my surprise it

seemed to star shedding the Filter Material from One Side of the Disc!

First time I have ever seen it happen. No trouble at all returning it

from B&H, (they've always been very good about that sort of thing),and

I ordered a new one from Heliopan. Still waiting! Made me think twice

    re Tiffen though. Cheers, Pete

  14. I am thinking of making a trip to Nova Scotia in May to shoot some B&W Sea Scapes. I have been told that the more you protest that you don't want your film "zapped" by X Ray, the stronger dose it gets. Was wondering whether to ship my 220 rolls ahead along with My Delta 400, via UPS, or whether to try and get the film I need in Halifax. I understand there may be a price differential in Canada, any ideas would be welcome!Am planning on sending my exposed stuff back to U.S. by means other than U.S.Snail. Pete
  15. I have an ever ready case that came new, with My Contax 11A. Had the Camera C.L.A.'d a couple of years ago on L.I. by the Zeiss People and it seems to be in excellent shape: however, the stitching on the front flap, i.e. the hard nose that covers the 1.5 Sonnar is worn away and the strap seems to be suffering from "tempus fugit". Does anyone on the group know of anyone who specializes in repair and refurbishing of leather cases to a high standard? Apologizing for taking up the space, but we brought this Camera on My Honeymoon in Rome, and I'm fond of it and it takes darned good pictures!! Tnx. Pete Harvey
  16. I'm a bit upset, but would like to cry on someone's shoulder! Brought an R4 SL Mot on e-bay for $250.00 It was advertized as "as is: anyway, it will cost me close to 400.00 to get it CLA'd by Kindermann. Should I just assume that an R4 CLA'd is as good as new? Bit surprised at an

Elmarit-R 28mm I sent in along with the body. That's going to cost 156.00! Makes you wonder if buying new is the only way to go! I really enjoy reading all the expertize on the Group. Please, I'm not mad at Kindermann, I think they are being very reasonable. Lens will be re collimated, plus lubed and cleaned. Just wondering how far you can stretch a description. Pete Harvey

  17. Still having a hard time finding Filter Size,(thread size) for my old 180mm lens. I would replace it with a newer version, but it takes,to my eyes), good photos. B&H very helpful, but their Leica Books give no answer, and the 72mm I have is a "throw fit", in British Engineering Terms, i.e. loose as L! I guess it's a 77mm thread. Also, the bushing on the Lens Barrel is a Continental Thread, does anyone know if this is an insert, or must I send the Lens in to someone to get it tapped?

Who would you recommend? Apologizing to all for what must seem to be stupid questions, but the smaller towns in Florida are bereft of any sort of Leica knowledge. B&W Film, haven't stocked it in ages!! Pete H.

  18. Is the triggering current of a Vivitar 283 Flash of sufficient value to damage the shutter contacts on a Leicaflex SL? Porter have a limiting device in their catalogue, which I assume is generic! Is a specific Leica Device on the market? Thank you in advance for your input. Pete Harvey
  19. I need to buy Medium Yellow and Orange Filters for following lenses:-a, 28mm f2.8 Elmarit R, b, 50mm S'cron R f 2.0,

c,135 mm Elmarit R f2.8, d, Elmarit R 180mm f2.8. (Old Style with tripod support in middle of barrel). I can't seem to find co-relation between "Series" and Thread Size, Could anyone please help?. Also, the Lens Hood for the 28mm is set up for a Polarizer Filter, I assume it takes a Circular Polarizer. I need Leica Quality Filters, does this mean any brand to avoid? I have been told a Series Filter is Minus Threads, true? Do you buy split type housing? Thank you in advance for your sharing your knowledge with an old Canon User who saw the light!

  20. I have had and used an SL as the original owner with a 50mm s'cron.

(I cringe, but must admit that I always carried a Canon EOS 620 with a short zoom in My Flight Bag). Now retired, I'd like to pick up a couple of lenses for the SL. Sartorius classes most cameras as having a "Leica R bayonet interchangeable". My Question, when did the camera line,"R", change from the Two Cam set up, to a Three? Can the SL be changed to a Three Cam Mount or should I look for a newer Model and which Model R is preferred? Please forgive My Question, but Leica isn't well known in the Ocala FL area. Pete
