bob, having just turned 75 and a slr graflex my first camera...a note.
in the old days we rarely used film holders hand held. instead film
packs that haven't been around for years. all you did was pull the
tab, kinda like polaroid pack film. why don't you try a polaroid back
with 665 p/n film. neg is smaller but i find very nice. of course it
may not fit your camera. anyway, glad to hear somebody is using the
oldies hand held frank

the cutters mentioned are nice...but if you want the absolute
best..most precise..repeatable,,allmeasurements made on the
cutter...try the english made keencut. i bought mine when i lived in
colo and they ere in boulder. their number then was 800 240 5336.
with this cutter you NEVER overrun a corner. as you can see..i like
mine. good luck. when you mat your own its a different feeling.

i have used many different packs in the past for 6x9 to 8x10. if you
go to the backpacking shop and get a closed foam sleeping pad you can
cut and fold it to fit your stuff. i then either stich it by hand or
glue it to shape. it may not be as convenient but you can put a
complete outfit together for pennies (well, maybe a little more). one
of my best rigs for my 8x10 is a big duffel type gym bag strappedto an
army surplus pack frame for five bucks. there is too great a need for
the name stuff in photography, the cost of a fancy pack can buy a lot
of film. Frank

My wife and I both took two classes in Colorado. Both came into them
feeling that we knew a lot, and found out a lot we didn't! Howard's
dry sense of humor was fun, particularly relative to out mutual
friend (not), Fred Picker, with whom Howard had interesting (heated)
discussions in (I think) Camera and Darkroom.

He has since assisted me with many things by phone. We were fortunate
to be able to purchase several of his prints (workshop attendees are
offered really good deals, if you're a collector) which we continue to
enjoy in our home. We hang him with Brett Weston, Lucien Clergue, and
Philippe(?)Halsman, and feel he's as good as.

Hope you enjoy your experience.
how old are we?

76 years old in what seems to be the body of a 90 year old. started
in l938 with a 39 cent univex and soup bowls for trays. in 39 got
very used, leaky bellows graphlex. now have 6x9 4x5 and 11x14.
still love it. frank ferreira
